San Marino Grand Prix History

The first MotoGP San Marino Grand Prix happened in 1981 at the Autodromo Dino Ferrari Imola Circuit, one of the top circuits in Italy, before it moved to the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello for the second race in 1982. However, it returned to the Imola Circuit in 1983 and then back to the Mugello Circuit for the 1984 event.

However, in 1985, the event went to its third venue. The San Marino Grand Prix was hosted at the Circuito Internazionale Santa Monica, also known as the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. It was its home until 1987. The following year, the San Marino Grand Prix was removed from the MotoGP calendar.

It returned in 1991, but this time, it also returned to the Mugello Circuit. But the comeback didn’t last as the event was not part of the 1992 calendar because Bernie Ecclestone and the IRTA meddled with the chosen Grand Prix. However, fortunately, it returned to the calendar in 1993, giving us another year at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello circuit.

Unfortunately, the MotoGP race was removed from the calendar from 1994 until 2006. After more than a decade away from the calendar, the San Marino Grand Prix race returned and has been around ever since. However, it returned to the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, giving us some of the best experiences since 2007.
