New York Knicks

The New York Knicks have been one of the cornerstone franchises in professional basketball since the franchise was formed in 1946 and was one of the original members of the NBA. Unfortunately, the team’s popularity has not been matched by their success on the court, as the team has won only two titles in its over 60 years of existence.

The team seems to be on an upswing, however, with coach Tom Thibodeau leading a young group that is one of the better defensive teams in the league. The Knicks have an All-NBA forward in Julius Randle as well as an up-and-coming supporting cast that has many New York fans feeling like another run at a title could be coming in the near future.

Team History

The Knicks were formed in 1946 as a member of the Basketball Association of America, which merged with the National Basketball League in 1949 to create the National Basketball Association. The team flirted with a league championship in its first decade of existence, making the finals three times, but could never break through. It took until the 1969-70 season, when a young core defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in a memorable seven-game series, for the Knicks to finally win a title.

Three years later, the same two teams matched up in the Finals, and again, the Knicks took home the title. It was the last time they’d reach the championship series until the 1993-94 campaign when center Patrick Ewing led the team to the NBA Finals, where it lost to the Houston Rockets.

Ewing’s era was a successful one for the Knicks, but they couldn’t get over the hump and put another championship on the team’s resume. A surprise Finals appearance in 1999 also ended with a loss, and New York has yet to reach that level of success again.

Championships Won by the New York Knicks

For all of the great players and teams that have played in Madison Square Garden over the years, the Knicks only have two NBA championships to their credit. New York has won their way into the NBA Finals eight times but has come away victorious just the two times.

New York won the 1970 NBA Finals by edging the Los Angeles Lakers in a classic seven-game series that included the iconic return of Willis Reed for Game 7 after he was injured in Game 5. It was the first league title for the Knicks, with Reed earning MVP honors for the series.

Three years later, the Knicks won their second NBA title, again beating the Lakers in the championship series. New York won this matchup in just five games, with Reed again taking home MVP honors.

The Knicks have won four conference titles and eight division titles over the franchise’s history.

Important Team Events

There have been a number of important team events for the Knicks, from great draft picks to influential trades to fantastic playoff runs. The drafting of Willis Reed in 1964 started an ascension for the team, which concluded with two championships in a span of four years in the early 1970s. Red Holzman coached those teams and had great success with players like Reed, Phil Jackson, Walt Frazier, Dave DeBusschere, and Earl Monroe.

The team struggled for a number of seasons but the franchise’s fortunes turned in 1985 when it won the first-ever NBA lottery for the No. 1 overall pick in the draft and the prize of center Patrick Ewing. The big man out of Georgetown dominated the paint for the Knicks for 15 seasons, helping the team become a mainstay in the playoffs and a title contender for many seasons.

The hiring of Pat Riley as head coach elevated New York to potential championship status in 1991. The team reached the 1994 NBA Finals before falling to the Houston Rockets in a seven-game series and were one of the biggest nemeses for Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls teams in the 1990s.

Top Players

Although there were plenty of great players that have played for the Knicks before and after him, Patrick Ewing has to be considered the greatest player to have ever played for the team. After coming to the team in the 1985 NBA Draft, Ewing established himself as one of the top big men in the game, becoming the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, making 11 All-Star Game appearances, earning All-NBA first- or second-team honors seven times, and becoming a member of the original USA Basketball Dream Team in 1992.

Not far behind Ewing would be another big man, Willis Reed. The center was with the franchise for 10 seasons as a player and a little more than a season as a head coach. Reed won the NBA’s MVP award in 1969-70, won the NBA Finals MVP award twice, and was a seven-time NBA All-Star, including taking the game’s MVP honors in 1970.

When it comes to backcourt play for the Knicks, there is none better than Walt “Clyde” Frazier. One of the smoothest players on the court and stylish off it, Frazier was part of the NBA championship teams of the early 1970s, including putting up 36 points, 19 assists, seven rebounds, and five steals in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals. Frazier was a stalwart on defense, earning NBA All-Defense first-team honors seven straight seasons, and he is still the franchise’s all-time leader in assists with 4,791.

Top Coaches

The only two NBA championships in Knicks franchise history came under head coach Red Holzman, who guided New York to the Finals three times over a four-year span. Holzman finished his 14 seasons as head coach of New York with a franchise-best 466 regular-season victories, and he took the team to the postseason in nine different campaigns.

The arrival of Pat Riley to the New York sideline brought a new style of basketball to the Big Apple, with the Knicks becoming a physical defensive team that made life difficult for any opponent. Riley’s Knicks were consistent title contenders, making it to the NBA Finals in 1994 before falling to the Houston Rockets. In each of Riley’s four seasons with New York, the team won at least 51 games in the regular season and advanced to at least the conference semifinals in the postseason.

Late in the 1995-96 season, Jeff Van Gundy replaced the departing Don Nelson as head coach of the Knicks after spending a number of years as an assistant under Riley and Nelson. The little-known coach ended up getting the Knicks back to the NBA Finals in 1999 as the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference and finished with 248 regular-season wins over five-plus seasons as the team’s head coach.

Injuries

Injuries are an inevitable part of professional sports, and the New York Knicks, like all teams, have faced their share of challenges in this regard. Whether dealing with minor setbacks or more significant injuries, the Knicks’ resilience and commitment to player health and recovery have remained steadfast. The team’s ability to adapt and support their athletes through injury setbacks underscores their dedication to long-term success. Fans of the Knicks understand that injuries are a temporary obstacle in the team’s ongoing journey, and they eagerly await the return of their favorite players, knowing that each comeback signifies a renewed determination to achieve greatness on the basketball court.
