The Arizona State Sun Devils Stats are currently scorching through the Pac-12, holding a strong tie for second place with a 14-4 record.

Their journey has been a fiery mix of dominance and close calls. Thumping victories over USC (82-67) and Oregon State (77-68) displayed their offensive firepower. Yet, narrow losses to Arizona (62-74) and UCLA (69-76) exposed defensive lapses.

The offensive charge is led by DJ Horne, averaging 16.9 points per game, and Frankie Collins, dropping 14.1 points per game. However, consistent team defense and capitalizing on free throws are crucial for further ascension.

Arizona State Sun Devils History

Arizona State has been one of the oldest programs in the history of men’s collegiate basketball as they began in the 1911 season under C.W. Adams. As of this writing, the Sun Devils have a record of 1422-1271 (.528 winning percentage) throughout the program’s history. It took a while but the Sun Devils were able to make the AP Poll as high as 10th during the 1961 season. They were able to get as high as third in three different seasons (1962, 1980, 2017).

They were an independent program until the 1931 season where they were part of the Border Intercollegiate Athletics Association until the 1962 season. Then, they joined the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) for over a decade until they left for the Pac-10 Conference in the 1978 regular season. They were members of the Pac-10 in 1978 and have been a member of the conference ever since.

Key Stats

As the season is in the midst of happening as this is being written, NCAAB stats are going to change. At this point, sophomore guard DJ Horne has been leading the Sun Devils as he is averaging 13.5 points per game. The biggest defensive player for Arizona State has been junior forward Alonzo Gaffney as he is averaging 0.8 steals and 1.6 blocks this season.

The offense has been struggling as a whole as they are 380th in the nation scoring 63.1 points per game and are shooting 38.9 percent from the floor as a unit. If they can figure out how to be a more consistent offense with more than three players scoring 10+ points per game this season, they can be a tougher program that could win more games and get them into this upcoming March Madness.

Arizona State Sun Devils Championships

Arizona State began playing men’s basketball games officially during the 1911-12 season and was an independent team until they joined the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association during its inception for the 1931-1932 season. They won the conference during the 1957, 1958, 1960, and 1961 seasons. They transferred to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in 1962 and won the conference title in 1962, 1963, 1972, and 1974. Since then, they have not won a Pac 10 or Pac 12 Conference Championship.

The Sun Devils were able to make their first NCAA Tournament in the 1957 season before losing in the first round. They made it back in the 1960 season and advanced to the regional final before getting eliminated. They never made it further than that in their program’s history.

Important Team Events

Unfortunately for the program, one of their biggest team events was a scandal that has since become the subject of a Netflix documentary. In the 1994 season, guards Stevin Smith and Isaac Burton were members of a point-shaving scandal (intentionally winning or losing against the spread) to the point that he was given $20,000 per game he participated in. It only happened in four games but the scandal has popped up and has gone down in infamy for the program.

Arizona State has been trying to bounce back and step up as they have that event as a black cloud over the program, despite it happening almost 30 years ago. The program has recovered on the court and climbed as high as third in the nation according to AP Poll so it will be interesting as they try to make an incredible win the most important team event in their program’s history.

Top Players

There have been a lot of solid players that have been able to be a part of the Sun Devils program but the top-scorer for the team was guard Eddie House. He is the only player in the history of Arizona State to score at least 2,000 points as he has scored 2,044 points from the 1996-97 season to 1999-2000.

One of the most notable players to be a member of Arizona State has been James Harden, who played 69 games in the two seasons that he played during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. He had a solid career as a member of the Sun Devils as he finished averaging 19 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.1 steals per game on 50.6 percent from the field, 37.6 percent from the three-point line, and 75.5 percent from the free-throw line in his collegiate career.

Top Coaches

The Sun Devils have had 19 different head coaches throughout the history of their program but the coach that had incredible success was Ned Yulk. Yulk was the head coach of Arizona State for 25 seasons (1958-1982) and was the only coach to win a conference championship for the team as he had a career record of 405-273 (.597 winning percentage) and made the NCAA Tournament in nine of those seasons.

Another important coaching figure in the history of the university was Herb Sendek. He was the head coach of the Sun Devils from 2007-2015 and had a record 159-137. During his tenure with Arizona State, the team played in March Madness twice. Both of these coaches have incredible legacies for the program and really laid the bricks for a successful team in the future.
