Clemson Tigers

Team Summary

The Clemson Tigers Stats hold a 10-5 record, as they find themselves in the middle of the pack of a division that has some of the best teams men’s college basketball has to offer. Led by head coach Brad Brownell, the Tigers hope they can find themselves in the NCAA March Madness Tournament for the second straight year, as they took a loss to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the first round of the tourney in 2021. The Tigers are 2-2 in conference play at this point in the season. They earned victories over the Virginia Cavaliers and NC State Wolfpack and took losses to Virginia and the Miami Hurricanes. The highest point total they’ve put up in a game this season is 93 points, as that came in a victory over the Bryant Bulldogs.

Although they’re not the powerhouse team that some of their conference counterparts are, they’re arguably the best 3-point shooting team among them all.

Team History

The first time Clemson has ever been a part of March Madness was back in 1980, as they made it to the Elite Eight that year. However, they haven’t made it that far sense, but they did make it to the Sweet 16 as recently as 2018.

The 1980 team that lost to the UCLA Bruins in the Elite Eight featured Larry Nance, Horace Wyatt, and John “Moose” Campbell, as they were dubbed the “Clemson Skyline” given the fact that they were all listed at 6-foot-10.

The team that made it to the Sweet 16 back in 2018 featured future NBA player Donte Grantham, Marcquise Reed, Gabe Devoe, Shelton Mitchell, and Elijah Thomas. That team took a loss to the Kansas Jayhawks.

The other times Clemson had made it as deep as the Sweet 16 was in 1990 when they took a loss to the Connecticut Huskies, and in 1997, when they lost to the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Important Team Events

Clemson made it to the Sweet 16 in 2018, as they took down the New Mexico Aggies in the first round and then the Auburn Tigers in the round of 32.

Unfortunately for them, they ran into a better Kansas Jayhawks team. Still, they somehow managed to lose by just four points after trailing by as many as 20 points in the second half, albeit Kansas was never really in serious danger to lose that game.

This run was very significant, though, as it was their first time in the Sweet 16 in 21 years.

Their run to the Elite Eight back in 1980 signifies the deepest they’ve ever been in March Madness in program history, as they beat the Utah State Aggies, BYU Cougars, and Lamar Cardinals before being defeated by UCLA.

In 1990, they lost to top-seeded Connecticut by one point in the Sweet 16. In 1997, they took a double-overtime loss to top seeded Minnesota in the Sweet 16, giving fans something to remember despite the unfortunate ending.
