They have been a team that has made the postseason tournament but has failed to be successful with an 11-17 NCAA Tournament record but today, we are going to discuss the illustrious history of the Colorado Buffaloes men’s basketball program.

Buffaloes Standings

For over a century, the Colorado Buffaloes men’s basketball team has woven a tapestry of grit and determination on the hardwood. Founded in 1906, the Buffs have amassed a proud tradition, reaching the NCAA tournament 14 times and capturing 3 conference championships. Their 1955 Final Four appearance remains a program highlight, while legendary coach Sox Walseth led them to 13 NCAA bids alone. Though recent years haven’t yielded the same success, iconic players like David Harrison and Chauncey Billups continue to inspire future generations. With a passionate fanbase and a commitment to excellence, the Colorado Buffaloes basketball program remains a beacon of resilience, forever striving to write new chapters in its storied history.

Colorado Buffaloes History

The Colorado Buffaloes have been around since the 1901-1902 season and have been doing very well as they have posed a career 1373-1236 record (.526 winning percentage). They were an independent program until the 1910 season when they joined the Mountain States Athletic Conference (MSAC). Colorado stayed members of the MSAC for 36 years but then eventually left to join the Big 7 Conference prior to the 1947 season and stayed members when it transformed to the Big 8 Conference until its eventual ending after the 1995-96 season.

The Buffaloes joined the Big 12 Conference for a while as they were members from the 1996-97 season until their departure for the Pac-12 Conference after the 2011-11 season. With Tad Boyle leading the way, the program has remained inside of the Pac-12 Conference ever since.

Key Stats

The Buffaloes are playing very well to begin the regular season as they are currently 12-4  (4-2) as of this writing. The offense has been doing well but could improve as they are averaging 71.4 points per game, which is 207th in the country. They are an average shooting team as they have a shooting slashline of 44.6/32/72.1 as a team so far A huge positive for the program has been their ability to grab rebounds as they are 84th in the nation with 38.7 rebounds per game as well.

Their most impactful player this season has been sophomore forward Jabari Parker as he is playing 26.1 minutes and is recording 13.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 0.6 blocks, and 0.6 steals per game. The team has three players averaging at least 11 points and if they can continue to strengthen their defense, they have a chance of being a solid team throughout the rest of the season.

Championships Won by the Team

Colorado has never won a National Championship throughout the history of the program but that does not mean they have lacked success with championships. They have accumulated 20 conference championships, with 19 of those happening during the season and once with a conference tournament victory. The Buffaloes first won a conference title as members of the Skyline Conference during the 1912-1913 season and won it in six of the next nine years. As a member of the Big 7 Conference, the Buffaloes won the conference championship in the 1954-55, 1961-62, and 1968-69 seasons.

There was a long gap of time between the Big 7 Conference Championship during the 1968-69 season and their only Conference Tournament win as that is how the Pac-12 decides which program gets an automatic bid into their NCAA Tournament. The Buffaloes were able to win the tournament in the 2011-12 season to get the at-large bid.

Important Team Events

The biggest game in the history of Colorado men’s basketball was a long time ago as the Iowa Hawkeyes squared off against the Colorado Buffaloes in the third-place game in the NCAA Tournament back on March 19, 1955. The Buffalo played well early as they held a 35-28 lead going into halftime.

They ended up winning the game 75-54 after going on a 40-26 run throughout the second half of the game and had five players in double figures. Jim Ranglos led the game with 18 points and 11 rebounds off the bench and had a huge game. The Buffaloes were able to drive the ball and go to the free-throw line as they ended up shooting 40 free-throws throughout the game. This was tied for the furthest that the program has gone in the tournament and is nothing to scoff at as this was a great game for Colorado. There is a way for them to make into this March Madness.
