The Fordham Rams men’s basketball program boasts a rich history, dating back to 1905. They’ve captured 15 conference championships, most recently conquering the Atlantic 10 in 2000. Their pinnacle came in the 1974 NCAA Tournament, reaching the Elite Eight led by the legendary guard, Charlie Yelverton. However, the program faced challenges in recent years, experiencing several coaching changes and failing to reach the NCAA Tournament since 2001. Currently, the Rams are rebuilding under Coach Kyle Neptune, striving to recapture their past glory and return to the national spotlight. As of March 7, 2024, they sit at 11th place in the Atlantic 10 conference, aiming to climb the standings and potentially secure a berth in the postseason tournaments.

Rams History

Fordham is one of the oldest programs in the country. The basketball program was formed in 1902, and while success hasn’t always been there, the program has posted a winning record overall. The Rams have logged a record of 1,537-1,425 overall for a 52% winning percentage.

The program has been a member of six different sports conferences and an Independent on five separate occasions. Before becoming a part of the Atlantic 10 in 1995, Fordham was a member of the Patriot League and the MAAC before that.

Fordham has also been a part of multiple conferences that no longer exist. The program was a member of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Metro for two seasons.

Before that, they belonged to the New Jersey-New York Seven. Fordham belonged to the Metro NY conference in the fifties and early sixties in the fifties and early sixties.

Championships

While Fordham has logged a modicum of success over the years, they have won only a single regular-season conference championship. They have made a few nice runs in the conference tournament season, earning the automatic to the NCAA tournament three times.

The program has not been to the NCAA tournament since 1992, which was their first appearance since 1971. In their four appearances, Fordham has won a pair of tournament games, logging a 2-4 record overall.

Fordham has made numerous National Invitational Tournament appearances over the years. Since 1943 the Rams have appeared in the secondary postseason tournament sixteen times with an overall record of 5-17.

The most recent postseason for the program was in 2016, when they participated in the CIT. They lost by three points to Boston University.

Important Fordham Events

On February 28th, 1940, Fordham participated in the first-ever televised college basketball game. The Rams played the Pittsburgh Panthers in Madison Square Garden. They ultimately lost, but they are one of only two programs in the nation that can make the claim.

On January 16th, 1925, Fordham opened Rose Hill Gymnasium, a 3,200 seat arena on the campus in the Bronx. It is currently one of the oldest gyms still in use in NCAA division one basketball.

Top Players in Program History

Perhaps the most recognizable name in Fordham program history is Smush Parker for obvious reasons. Parker, who only played for Fordham for a single season after transferring into the College of Southern Idaho program, averaged over 16 points per game as a sophomore.

He entered the NBA draft after his sophomore season, in which he averaged over 16 points per game. He went undrafted but did play for six different NBA teams and multiple teams overseas. He won the Greek Cup in 2004 when he led the finals in scoring.

Before becoming a star for Villanova, forward Eric Paschall was a force for the Rams as a freshman. Paschall averaged nearly 16 points per game and over five rebounds in his lone season with Fordham. He won an NCAA championship with the Wildcats and would later make the NBA All-Rookie team in 2020.

The program has retired just three jerseys in program history. Bob Mullens (7), Ed Conlin (11) and Ken Charles (44). Bob Hassmiller was the only All-American in program history when he was on the second team in 1939.

Ed Conlin, one of only three players to have his number retired by the school, is Fordham’s all-time leading scorer with 1,886 points from 1951 to 1955.

Ken Charles, another of the three players to have his number retired by the program, scored 679 points in the 1972-73 season.

The Rams finished the 1970-71 season ranked #9 in the nation. That is the only season in which the program was ranked to end the season and the last time the team was ranked at all.

Ed Conlin is the program’s all-time leading rebounder with 1,930 rebounds. Conlin also owns the five best individual rebounding performances in a game. In each of those games, Conlin logged 31 or more rebounds.Since 2011, UD Arena has been the host site for the First Four, annually beginning March Madness.

The Fordham Rams have not registered a 20 win season since the 1990-91 campaign. Coach Nick Macarchuck led the Rams to a 25-8 record overall and an 11-1 mark in league play.
