It has been Mark Few that has transformed Gonzaga into a national powerhouse, and he is one of the best college basketball coaches in the country. Gonzaga has also been able to recruit well over the past decade, and former players have moved on to the NBA.
Playing in the West Coast Conference doesn’t always provide a ton of competition, but Gonzaga can now compete with anyone in the nation. Gonzaga went from the hunter to the hunted and did so in a thrilling fashion.

Team History
The Gonzaga Bulldogs men’s basketball team began to play during the 1907-08 season, and things have changed in a big way since that. This basketball program was once a small team on the West Coast, but it has turned into a national powerhouse.
Gonzaga is located in Spokane, Washington, and competes in the West Coast Conference. This is a basketball program with a rich history, although a majority of the major success has come over the last 20 years.
The Bulldogs have made a pair of Final Four appearances, finishing as the runner-up each time. Gonzaga has reached the NCAA Tournament every single year since 1999, except for 2020 when the event was canceled.
Gonzaga has had 15 different players win the Player of the Year Award in the West Coast Conference, and that number will continue to rise in the future. The Bulldogs are always on the shortlist of betting favorites to win that league each year.
2022 Key Stats
When taking a look at the key stats for the Gonzaga men’s basketball team in 2022, it is pretty clear as to why this team is one of the best in the country. The Bulldogs are scoring more than 85 points per game this season while holding their opponents to less than 68 points per game.
Head coach Mark Few always does a great job of putting together a talented roster, but it is one that plays an unselfish brand of basketball. The Bulldogs are averaging 17.6 assists per game, which is one of the best marks in the country.
Forward Drew Timme leads the Bulldogs with 16.7 points per game, and he is on the shortlist of national player of the year candidates. Freshman Chet Holmgren will likely spend just one year in Spokane and he has chipped in with 13.0 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.
Championships Won by the Team
Gonzaga is still looking for that elusive NCAA Championship, but they are going to be in the mix again in 2022. The Bulldogs have absolutely dominated the other teams in the West Coast Conference, winning 16 tournament titles since 1998.
Winning the conference tournament is the first step to getting into the NCAA Tournament, but it’s usually a given that they will be in the field. The Bulldogs have also picked up a pair of Maui Invitational Tournament titles, and that is one of the top events held during the regular season.
Since Gonzaga is now one of the best college basketball programs in the country, the team will continue to work towards the ultimate goal of winning a national championship.
Important Team Events
The most important team event for Gonzaga is the NCAA Tournament, and they can usually pencil this into the season calendar. Even the best college basketball programs in the country have failed to live up to the current streak that Gonzaga is on.
As mentioned above, the Maui Invitational is always a highlight of any season when the Bulldogs are in the field. This tournament tends to highlight the top programs in the country, but Gonzaga is not in the field every year.
Since it takes a conference title to reach March Madness, the biggest event is always the West Coast Conference Tournament.
Top Players
John Stockton was known as the best player to ever play for the Gonzaga Bulldogs in the 20th century, and he went on to have a terrific NBA career. Since the arrival of Mark Few in 1999, Gonzaga has been able to fill out a roster that is always loaded with talent.
Adam Morrison usually gets the distinction of being the best player in the history of Gonzaga basketball as he was the player of the year in 2006. Since 2002, Gonzaga has had five other first-team All-American honorees, and more should be on the way in 2022 and beyond.
Dan Dickau was the first Gonzaga player to ever be named as a first-team All-American, earning that honor in 2002. The other four players to earn the distinction of being a first-team All-American are: Kelly Olynk, Nigel Williams-Goss, Rui Hachimura, and Corey Kispert.
Currently, on the 2022 team, Drew Timme and Chet Holmgren are both going to be on the shortlist of players capable of being named to the All-American list.
Top Coaches
There have been four different coaches that have won more than 120 games while leading the Bulldogs, but three names stand above the rest. Of that group of top three coaches, it is Mark Few that is easily the best coach in the history of the school.
Mark Few has racked up more than 630 wins at Gonzaga and has a winning percentage of more than 80 percent. Few helped transform Gonzaga from a mid-major program to one of the best in the country since arriving in 1999.
Hank Anderson and Dan Fitzgerald are the two other coaches that have had terrific careers while coaching at Gonzaga. Anderson racked up 290 wins from 1951-1972 and was the all-time winningest coach until Mark Few shattered that record. Fitzgerald had two different stints as head coach of the Bulldogs and managed to record 252 wins.
