Maryland Terrapins

Team History

The University of Maryland has been long known as one of the most successful men’s basketball programs in the country, and the Terrapins have had even more success since hiring Coach Gary Williams before the 1989-1990 season. The Terrapins have appeared in fourteen NCAA Tournaments since Williams was hired, including eleven straight from 1994 to 2004, highlighted by the school’s first Final Four trip in 2001 and first National Championship in 2002.

The Terrapins also competed in what many consider to be the greatest ACC game in history, and potentially one of the best games ever, the 1974 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament championship game, which was won by the eventual national champion North Carolina State 103-100 in overtime. The game was significant in driving the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship to expand, enabling at-large bids and more than one team per conference to compete. That year Maryland has six future NBA players on the roster and did not make the NCAA tournament. This has pushed many pundits to think that it was the best team to never play in the NCAA tournament.

Championships Won by the Team

Maryland has won one National Championship in their history as they won the title in 2002. In the championship game, they faced off with Indiana whom they defeated by 12 points. They had a chance to repeat as champions but fell in the Final Four the next season. The Terrapins have won four postseason conference tournaments which they won in 1931, 1958, 1984, and 2004.

They have won seven regular-season conference titles. They have won one in the Big Ten (2020), five in the ACC (1975, 1980, 1995, 2002, and 2010), and one in the Southern (1931).

Important Team Events

Maryland has one main tradition that they do on a yearly basis. Charles “Lefty” Driesell, the Maryland men’s basketball coach from 1969 to 1986, is credited with coining the term “Midnight Madness” when, on the first official day of team practice in 1971, he invited the public to watch his players run at midnight. The event, which takes place on the second weekend of every October and incorporates dance routines by the basketball teams, slam dunk and three-point shooting contests, and a performance by Gymkana, is now known as Maryland Madness to reflect its shift to a more family-friendly hour.

Top Players

There are five players that every Maryland diehard fan will know. Juan Dixon is a well-known former Maryland player who was a key member of the team that won the National Championship in 2022. His 333 thefts are only 11 shy of Johnny Rhodes’ ACC record, and he leads Maryland in three-pointers made (239) and points (2,269). In seven NBA seasons, Dixon remained an excellent scorer, albeit off the bench. In 2005-06, he averaged a career-high 12.3 points per game as a part-time starter for the Portland Trail Blazers. Greivis Vasquez, a high-scoring point guard with a great long-range shot, was a one-man show at Maryland for four seasons. With 191 steals, he is eighth all-time in Terrapin history, while his offensive contributions include ranking second in points (2,171), assists (772), and three-pointers made (230).

Joe Smith became the first and only Terrapin to win the Naismith Award in his two-year career. His career averages of 20.2 points and 10.7 rebounds per game are among Maryland’s top three. Smith, the Warriors’ first-round pick, was a good but not outstanding power forward, averaging 18.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Tom McMillen, a high-scoring power forward who led the Terps to their first NIT win in 1972, was named tournament MVP. He averaged 9.8 rebounds per game during his career, which was the sixth-best figure for a Terrapin, and he established a school record with 20.5 points per game.

Steve Blake wasn’t asked to do much scoring despite being a great long-range shooter who hit 182 “treys” at Maryland. His job was to be one of college basketball’s top distributors, controlling the offense for the 2002 national champions and amassing the fifth-highest career assist total (972) of any Division I player ever. Blake has also been an outstanding floor leader in the NBA, averaging up to 5.1 assists per game in his career.
