Miami Hurricanes History

The University of Miami Hurricanes boast a rich football tradition, capturing the national spotlight for decades. Their winning legacy includes five NCAA Division I National Championships in 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991, and 2001. Important Team Events

The Hurricanes got all the way to the Sweet 16 in 2016, as they took down the Buffalo Bulls 79-72 in the first game, Wichita State Shockers 65-57 before ultimately getting blown out by the eventual champion Villanova Wildcats.

The Hurricanes also got to the Sweet 16 in 2013, as they took down the Pacific Tigers 78-49 and Illinois Fighting Illini 63-59 before losing to the Marquette Golden Eagles.

The last time Miami got that far in the tournament prior to 2013 was in 2000, as they took down the Arkansas Razorbacks 75-71 and Ohio State Buckeyes 75-62 before losing to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

Miami defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels 87-77 in the ACC Tournament in 2013, as Shane Larkin led the way with 28 points, seven assists, and five rebounds. Trey McKinney-Jones chipped in 20 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Miami took down Georgia Tech, Boston College, and NC State prior to that game.

Top Players

Rick Barry spent three seasons with Miami, as he is their all-time leader in points and rebounds. He was a consensus First Team All-American in his third and final season with the team. Barry went on to enjoy a 15 year NBA career, as he had stints with the San Francisco/Golden State Warriors, Oakland Oaks/Washington Caps, New York Nets, and Houston Rockets. He was the NBA Finals MVP in 1975, five-time All-NBA First Team selection, an All-NBA Second Team selection, and eight-time All-Star.

John Salmons is third on the all-time assists and steals categories in Miami history, as he’s also been on the Second and Third All-Big East teams. Salmons went on to enjoy a 15 year NBA career, as he had stints with the Philadelphia 76ers, Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, Milwaukee Bucks, Toronto Raptors, and New Orleans Pelicans.

Tim James was the co Big East Player of the Year in 1999 as well as a two-time First Team All-Big East selection and Second Team All-Big East selection. He played for the Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets, and Philadelphia 76ers.

Shane Larkin is the only player to win National Player of the Year to date in their program history, as he was a huge part of the team’s run to the Sweet 16 in 2013. He has had stints with the Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, and Boston Celtics.
