Minnesota Golden Gophers

History

Since the end of World War I, the Gophers have been mostly eclipsed by other teams, notwithstanding their early success in basketball. Minnesota has won nine Big Ten titles in total, though just four since 1919. Minnesota won national titles in 1902, 1903, and 1919, according to college basketball research groups. Continue for more Minnesota Golden Gophers Stats.

The squad has also been subjected to NCAA sanctions, which have had an impact on performance and recruitment. The Gophers were involved in a major altercation with the Ohio State Buckeyes in the 1970s, and following an incident involving the illicit resale of tickets, they were disqualified from post-season games for two seasons. Even worse was the mid-1990s academic controversy involving then-coach Clem Haskins, which resulted in a Final Four participation being forfeited. The Golden Gophers have made 14 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. They have a 15–13 record as a team. However, their appearances in the competition in 1972, 1994, 1995, and 1997 have been nullified, leaving them with an official record of 9–10.

Championships Won by the Team

Minnesota has never won an NCAA title or a conference postseason tournament. They were named pre-tournament champions in 1902, 1903, and 1919 but have never won the tournament. They got to the Final Four in 1997 but that appearance was vacated. They have won the conference regular-season title nine times in school history. The Gold Gophers have won the NIT tournament three times, although two of their titles were vacated.

Important Team Events

The Gophers had a few rivalries in the early years of the program that haven’t lasted into the present age. A rivalry with Hamline University, currently a Division III institution in St. Paul, was one of them. Hamline was one of the country’s first collegiate basketball teams, and it took many years for Minnesota to catch up to them; they didn’t play until 1935. The Minnesota Aggies, representing the Minnesota School of Agriculture and Mining, which has now been absorbed into the University of Minnesota Twin Cities as the St. Paul campus, were the program’s strongest competitor in the early years.

Minnesota A&M dominated the Gophers, winning 10 straight games; the Gophers didn’t win their first game against the Aggies until 1899. This rivalry ended very quickly, with the two teams not meeting again until 1901. Because the University of Minnesota was the state’s sole Division I basketball program until 2021, there are no heated intra-state rivalries like there are in most states.

The Gophers were also a key player in the early contest for basketball supremacy between Eastern and Midwestern institutions. Minnesota’s strong 1902 season ended an Ivy League domination that lasted from 1901 through 1906. The Eastern teams, such as Yale, Columbia, and Dartmouth, used a more physical approach, whilst the Midwestern teams took a different strategy.
