Nebraska Cornhuskers

Team Summary

Nebraska has gotten off to a rough start to open up the 2021-22 season. They struggled out of the gates and never really got their footing underneath them. Nebraska lost the opener to Western Illinois by a point and then went 5-1 over their next six games. After that streak, they played NC State and lost 104-100 and it has been all downhill from there. They are 6-13 on the year and are 0-8 in the Big Ten play. It is safe to say that they are not going to be heading to the NCAA tournament.

Nebraska is scoring 73.4 points a game and has allowed 79.4 points per game this season. They are not a very good rebounding team as they only have 34.2 rebounds per game which is good for 312th in the country. Nebraska passes the ball better than they rebound it as they average 13.6 assists per game which is the 190th most in the country.

Bryce McGowens leads the team in scoring with 15.5 points per game. McGowens is a volume shooter as he only shoots 39.6 percent from the floor. Alonzo Verge Jr. leads the team in assists per game with 5.6 a contest. Derrick Walker shoots the ball at a good percentage as he hits 70.9 percent of his shots. Walker also leads the team in rebounds with 6.2 per game.

History

The school’s first men’s basketball team, as far as can be known, was formed on Feb. 2, 1897, barely six years after James Naismith established the game’s rules. Grant Memorial Hall was their home for all but two seasons until the Nebraska Coliseum opened in 1926. The “Bugeaters” defeated a team from the Lincoln YMCA 11-8 for their first win. In 1898, Nebraska played a doubleheader, losing two games against the Lincoln YMCA and splitting two games with the Omaha YMCA.

For the first time in 1899, NU challenged another university, winning games against Nebraska Wesleyan and Doane to clinch the unofficial state title. The next season, Nebraska, now known as the “Cornhuskers,” faced an out-of-state opponent for the first time, beating James Naismith and Kansas 48–8 in what is still KU’s greatest loss. The Premo-Porretta Power Poll rated NU’s 1900 team second nationally retroactively.

Nebraska holds the distinction of being the only major conference program to never win a game in the NCAA Tournament. Danny Nee, Nebraska’s all-time winningest head coach, coached the team for 14 years and was responsible for much of the team’s modest success. Nee guided the Cornhuskers to five NCAA Tournament berths and six NIT bids, including the 1996 NIT Championship, Nebraska’s sole national triumph.

Barry Collier was hired after Nee was fired in 2000 and headed the team for six years before departing to become the athletic director at Butler University. Nebraska subsequently hired Doc Sadler from UTEP, who guided the Cornhuskers through the Big 12 to Big Ten transition but, like Collier, failed to reach the NCAA Tournament. In his second season, Tim Miles led Nebraska back to the NCAA tournament, but they did not advance, and he was fired in 2019 when Nebraska hired former Chicago Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg to coach their team. Seeing them on this March Madness is going to be impressive.

2022 Key Stats

With 15.5 points per game, Bryce McGowens leads the squad in scoring. McGowens is a volume shooter, shooting only 39.6% from the field. With 5.6 assists per game, Alonzo Verge Jr. leads the squad in assists. Derrick Walker has a strong shooting percentage, hitting 70.9 percent of his shots. Walker also has the most rebounds on the squad, averaging 6.2 per game.

This season, Nebraska is averaging 73.4 points per game while allowing 79.4 points per game. They are a poor rebounding squad, averaging only 34.2 rebounds per game, which ranks them 312th in the country. Nebraska is better at passing the ball than rebounding it, averaging 13.6 assists per game, good for 190th in the country.

Championships Won by the Team

Nebraska has not won an NCAA tournament game in their school history so they have not won any championships of meaning. They have, however, won an NIT championship in 1996 as they featured two future NBA players. Nebraska has been their conference regular-season champion on six occasions but the most recent was in 1950. They have won one conference tournament as they won their conference tournament in 1994.

Nebraska was the champion of the division six times while they were in the Missouri Valley Conference. They won the North division all but once from 1908 to 1914. Nebraska has been one of the most unfortunate college basketball teams of all time but soon they will turn it around and win.

Important Team Events

Nebraska does not have any intense traditions that they do for their team like some college basketball programs. They do have a type of midnight madness though as they have a late-night practice to kick off the new season. This is a night where there are family events and people in the Lincoln area come to support very highly.

Nebraska has one big rivalry and that is with Creighton, who is from Omaha. They have some other smaller rivalries but the in-state battle with Creighton is near the top of the list. Nebraska fans also always enjoy their matchups they have with both Iowa State and Iowa as bordering states.

In the student section, fans do tend to go a little crazy with their traditions. The student section is dubbed “The Red Zone” and has room for 1,500 students, which is 10 percent of the arena’s capacity. Nebraska was #11 in attendance per game last year.

When Nebraska scores their first basket the student section throws shredded newspaper in the air. When the opposing team is announced the student section starts a “Husker Power” chant which has reached 105 decibels in the past. They also do very generic hand signals when shooting free throws and 3-pointers.

Top Players

Nebraska has not had the talent that many other schools have had but they still have had some really good players come through. One of the most notable and recognizable players would have to be Tyronn Lue. Lue played for Nebraska from 1995 to 1998 and had his #10 retired in 2009. Lue went on to play 11 years in the NBA and played on seven different teams. Lue is now the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers after getting his first head coaching gig with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Dave Hoppen, Stu Lantz, and Eric Piatkowski have also all had their number retired by the school and are among the best players to have ever come through the school. There have been 13 former Nebraska players play in the NBA and there are two current alumni in the NBA. Isaiah Roby and Dalano Banton are two players who are current NBA players from Nebraska.

Top Coaches

Undoubtedly the best head coach that Nebraska has had was Danny Nee. Nee coached the team from 1986 to 2000 and in that span went 254-190 and led the team to five NCAA tournament appearances and won an NIT championship. Nee has the most wins of all time in school history and led the team to a postseason appearance in 11 of his 14 years at the helm.

Nee’s tenure came to an end as their star guard suffered an injury early in 1999-2000 and the team struggled throughout the season. Nebraska won their last game of the season which allowed Nee to get the record for the most all-time head coaching victories. Nebraska finished 11-19 on the season and Nee was fired as they tied the record for most losses in a single season.

Nee just passed Joe Cipriano for most all-time wins but coached in three less seasons. Cipriano coached the team from 1963 to 1980 and finished with a record of 253-197. Cipriano remains one of the best head coaches in school history.

The current head coach is Fred Hoiberg and he has struggled to a 14-45 record through his first three seasons at the helm. Hoiberg will really need to turn the team around if he wants to be on the sideline for a few more years.
