Team Summary

The Nevada Wolf Pack Men’s Basketball program represents the University of Nevada in Reno, Nevada, and is in NCAA‘s Division I. Playing in navy blue and silver, Nevada currently competes in the Mountain West Conference.

Team History

The Nevada Wolf Pack Men’s basketball team began to play in 1913 under head coach C.E. Holway in which they finished with a 3-1 record. The team played games at the University Gymnasium, built in 1896.

From 1945 to 1983, games were played in the Virginia Street Gymnasium, which is currently used as a training center for university athletes. Then, beginning in 1983, they started to play in the current venue, the Lawlor Events Center.

The Nevada Wolf Pack began its first NCAA season in 1913. They joined the West Coast Athletic Conference in the 1969-70 season. The Wolf Pack have been affiliated with several conferences over the last 52 seasons, currently playing in the Mountain West Conference.

The Wolf Pack have had sixteen head coaches since their inaugural season in 1913, with their first head coach being C.E. Holway. He coached them for one season before handing off the reins to Silas Ross, who coached them for the next six seasons.

The Nevada Wolf Pack have a 7-5 overall record in 2022 and are currently second in the Mountain West Conference with a 1-0 mark. They started the season losing four of their first five games but have a 6-1 record since.

Grant Sherfield leads the team with 18.8 points and 6.6 assists per game. Warren Washington leads the team in rebounding and blocked shots with 7.2 and 1.7 per game, respectively.

Championships Won by the Team

Nevada has won a total of five conference tournament championships. They were the Big Sky Tournament champions in 1984 and 1985, the Western Athletic Conference Tournament winners in 2004 and 2006, and the Mountain West Conference Tournament Champions in 2017.

The team has also won twenty-three regular-season conference championships, with one in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference in 1920, ten in the Far West Conference between 1927 and 1966, two in the Big Sky Conference in 1984 and 1985, and six in the Western Athletic Conference between 2004 and 2012.

They also have three Mountain West Conference Championships from 2017 through 2019.

Important Team Events

The Nevada Wolf Pack have played in several different postseason tournaments in their history. They have nine NCAA Division I Tournament appearances with a combined record of 6-9. They made it as far as the Sweet Sixteen twice, in 2004 and 2018. Their last invitation was in 2019 when they lost in the first round to Florida, 70-61.

The Wolf Pack have appeared in four NCAA Division II championships and have a combined 1-6 record. Their only win was against San Diego, in which they finished third in their region.

Nevada appeared in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) five times and has a 5-5 record. They went as far as the quarterfinals in 2012, losing to Stanford 84-56.

In 1946, they were invited to play in the NAIA tournament in which they lost in the quarterfinals to Southern Illinois by a 66-58 score.

The College Basketball Invitational (CBI) is where the Wolf Pack has their only postseason championship. They’ve appeared three times with a 5-3 combined record. In the 2016 tournament, they came away with the title, beating Morehead State in the final game in overtime, 85-82.

Top Players

Nevada has had eleven players move on to the NBA after their careers at the school, with two of those players, Nick Fazekas and Edgar Jones, having their numbers retired by the Wolf Pack.

Fazekas is the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,464 points. He’s followed by Deonte Burton, who netted 2,102 points.

The most notable former player for the Wolf Pack is current NBA star JaVale McGee. He’s a three-time NBA Champion, winning two with the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018 and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020.

McGee’s mother Pamela and aunt Paula played professional basketball in the Women’s American Basketball Association in the 1980s together on the Dallas Diamonds. His mother also won an Olympic gold medal in 1984. In addition, his sister Imani McGee-Stafford currently plays for the Dallas Wings of the WNBA.

The winningest coach in Wolf Pack history is Mark Fox, who ended his career after the 2009 season with a .741 winning percentage. He led the team to four regular-season conference championships and one conference tournament victory. The team also made three NCAA Tournament appearances with Fox as head coach.

Sonny Allen has the most wins in Wolf Pack history with 203. He finished his Nevada career in 1987 and led the team to two regular-season conference titles, two conference tournament championships, and two NCAA Tournament appearances. He finished with a .562 win percentage.
