Oregon Ducks History

Oregon has been a program for 117 seasons now as they began back in the 1902 season as an independent program. However, they were only independent for 11 seasons as they joined the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) prior to the 1916 regular season. They were members of the program up until the 1959 season where they became an independent program for the second time in the school’s history.

They remained independent for five seasons before rejoining the rebranded Athletic Association of Western Universities (AAWU) before the 1964 season and remained throughout the rebranding as the Pac-8, Pac-10, and now Pac-12 Conference ever since. They have won eight conference championships and five conference tournaments in that span and have been one of the better programs in the nation.

Key Stats

As of this writing, the Oregon Ducks have been a successful program during the 2022 season as they are holding an 11-6 (4-2) record. They have not been a great offensive team thus far despite scoring 72.8 points per game, which is 173rd in the country. They have not been passing the ball well, averaging just 12.2 assists per game or rebounding with 34.7 rebounds, both outside of the top 290 teams in Division 1 Men’s Basketball.

The program is currently being led by senior guard Will Richardson as he is averaging 14.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 0.9 steals in 31.6 minutes of play. The Ducks need to be better as a team with the basketball if they want to be a successful program as the season progresses.

Championships Won by the Team

The Ducks have won eight regular season conference titles in the history of their program and won the conference tournament for an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament five times. They won a single National Championship in their history back in March of 1939. They won their first conference championship during the 1918-1919 season and won it during the 1938, 1944, 2001, 2015, 2019, and 2020 seasons as well.

Oregon won the bid for the Pac-12 Conference by winning the conference tournament five different times, with each happening since 2000 when the tournament was brought back after an 11-year hiatus. They won the Pac-12 Conference Tournament in the 2002, 2006, 2012, 2015, and 2018 seasons to clinch an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. They still haven’t win a March Madness tournament, but is never to late.

Important Team Events

The Oregon Ducks have had their greatest single game happen over 80 years ago as the Oregon Ducks faced off against the Ohio State Buckeyes in Patten Gymnasium I in Evanston, Illinois for the NCAA National Championship Final on March 27, 1939. Oregon had a solid first half as they entered the break up 21-16 and head coach Howard Hobson did not allow the team to take their foot off the gas pedal as they outscored the Buckeyes 25-17 in the second half to win the National Championship 46-33.

There was not much statistical recording in the game outside of points scored from that time period but John Dick led the game with 13 points and was one of three Oregon players with double-digit points as Bobby Anet and Laddie Gale each scored 10 points apiece. No other Ducks team has reached a National Championship Game since.

Top Players

You don’t have to go too far back in order to find one of their best players in the program’s history in guard Payton Pritchard, who was a member of the Ducks program from the 2016-17 season until the 2019-20 season. He played 144 games (140 starts) and averaged 13.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists on 37.9 percent from the three-point line. He is tied for the all-time lead in games played, leads in minutes played (4,854), total assists (659), and offensive win shares (13.6).

Another key player was forward Greg Ballard, who was a Duck from 1973-1977 and averaged 15.9 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 31.5 minutes. He holds the record for most rebounds in a career (1,119) and no other player has recorded 905. He was a two-time All-Pac 12 Conference player and a consensus All-American.

Top Coaches

The current head coach is Dana Altman and has the most wins for any coach in the program’s history as he has a 291-116 record since taking the job before the 2011 season. Since then, the Ducks have won four Pac-12 Conference titles, three Pac-12 Conference Tournament wins, seven trips to March Madness, and a final four appearance in the 2016-17 season. He has won at least 21 games every season since joining the Ducks.

Another coach that has to be mentioned is the great Howard Hobson, who was the coach of Oregon from 1936-1947. He finished with a career record of 212-124 (.631 winning percentage) but only won the conference championship and made the NCAA Tournament once during the 1938-39 season. However, he had a great run as the Ducks managed to win the National Championship that year for the only time in the history of the program.
