Team Summary

The University of Portland Pilots are a men’s college basketball team that competes in the West Coast Conference. Portland joined the WCC all the way back in 1976, and this is a private institution with an enrollment of just 3,200 students.

Shantay Legans is the current coach at the University of Portland, and he is tasked with trying to turn this program back around. Portland is known for being a major underdog in most games, especially once conference play begins.

The Chiles Center is the home stadium for the Portland Pilots, and it holds slightly less than 5,000 people. Portland is not known for it’s basketball program as there has not been much success through the years.

Team History

The Portland Pilots have had some success in the NAIA Tournament over the years, but that has not translated into the NCAA Tournament. Portland has made just two appearances in the NCAA (1959, 1996), and the school has never won an NCAA Tournament game.

The only West Coast Conference title for Portland came in 1996, and that gave them an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. The Pilots are 5-9 in NAIA Tournament games, reaching the Final Four of that tournament all the way back in 1952.

This school has never had a player reach the National Basketball Association, and only two former players have had international playing careers. In four appearances in the CIT, the Pilots have lost all four games to wrap up a season.

2022 Key Stats

The Portland Pilots are actually off to a decent season in 2021-22, posting a 9-6 record through their first 15 games. All of this action came outside of the West Coast Conference though, and things will be much tougher in league play.

Portland is currently scoring 74.9 points per game, while allowing 72.1 points per game to its opponents. The team is averaging more than 36 rebounds per game, putting them slightly better than the average.

There are four Pilots averaging double-figures this season, led by Tyler Robertson and his 15.6 points per game. Robertson is also leading the way with 6.4 rebounds per game, and Mike Meadows leads the team with 4.1 assists.

Championships Won by the Team

The Portland Pilots have never even come close to winning the NCAA Tournament, and the program is actually still looking for its first-ever NCAA Tournament win. If Portland is able to get into the tournament in the near future, you can expect them to be pretty significant betting underdogs in that matchup.

Portland was able to win the West Coast Conference Tournament back in 1996, and that gave them their second-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Winning the West Coast Conference is extremely difficult now that Gonzaga has emerged as a blue blood program.

There has been some success in the NAIA Tournament for the Portland Pilots, but the team was unable to win that title either. Portland has gone 5-9 in NAIA Tournament games and finished in fourth place all the way back in 1952.

Important Team Events

Since reaching the NCAA Tournament is never usually a realistic goal, there is one matchup that is circled on the calendar as a major event. Portland State is the top rival of the Portland Pilots, and this is always a battle when these two teams square off, specially in this March Madness games.

Portland is also a common opponent of the Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers, and those games are big events as well. The Pilots have a chance to prove themselves against the Pac-12 Conference schools in those matchups, and it’s a game that has plenty of significance in the state.

Portland is not usually a school that is going to have a resume that the NCAA Selection Committee is going to look at very seriously, the Pilots have to find a way to win the automatic bid. This can be done by winning the West Coast Conference Tournament, and that then becomes a major team event every season.

Top Players

The Portland Pilots basketball program has never had a consensus All-American selection, and there weren’t any alumni that went on to start in the NBA. Luke Sikma, son of Jack, was able to have a nice international playing career after leaving Portland.

Jose Slaughter is the all-time leading scorer for the Portland Pilots, falling just 60 points short of 2,000 for his career. Slaughter also has a number of season records as he had a monster 1980-81 year for the Pilots.

Rick Raivio is another important player in the history of the Portland Pilots basketball program as he averaged more than 17 points during his career. This is not a program that has produced a ton of talent or big names, but it was Slaughter and Raivio who were some of the top scorers.

Top Coaches

Portland has not been a highly successful college basketball program, but there were some good runs throughout history. Three different coaches were able to win at least 140 games when guiding the Pilots, but there is one specific man that sits well above the rest on the list.

Jack Avina was the head coach at Portland from 1971 to 1987 and he was able to rack up 222 wins during that time. Unfortunately, the Pilots were never able to reach the NCAA Tournament under the leadership of Avina.

Albert E. Negratti was able to guide the Portland basketball program to the NCAA Tournament and he is next on the list with 163 wins. Negratti was also able to win over 53 percent of his games at Portland, which is the best winning percentage with a minimum of 20 games coached.

Eric Reveno is a recent coach for Portland that had some success. Reveno led this basketball program for 10 seasons and racked up 140 victories.
