Saint Joseph’s Hawks

Team Summary

The 2021-22 St. Joseph’s Hawks have not been great so far this season. The Hawks are just 7-8 on the season and put some puzzling results on the board during the campaign. Saint Joe’s defeated Richmond by 27 points in Richmond but then lost a game on their home floor to lowly La Salle.

It’s not difficult to see the issues plaguing the Hawks, as their defensive ranks just 149th in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency. They don’t produce turnovers on the defensive end, ranking 354th in the country in defensive turnover percentage. They allow opposing offenses to shoot over 36 percent from behind the three-point line against them.

It doesn’t get any better on offense for Billy Lange’s group either. The Hawks rank 190th in the adjusted offensive efficiency and 169th in offensive effective field goal percentage. Saint Joseph’s is a perimeter-oriented team ranking 40th in the nation in three-pointers attempted while ranking 269th in the nation in free throws attempted.

Hawk’s History

Saint Joes has a rich history of basketball tradition. The program came to exist in 1909 and is one of the “Big Five” basketball programs in the Philadelphia area. That group also consists of LaSalle, Villanova, Temple, and The University of Pennsylvania.

The Hawks have an overall record of 1664-1177 during their program’s history and are one of the 50 winningest schools in division one history. The program has been a member of three different conferences while also spending time as an independent. Saint Joseph’s program was independent from its inception until 1958, when they joined the Mid-Atlantic Conference.

The Hawks remained with the MAC until 1974, when they joined the East Coast Conference. Their time in the ECC was short-lived as they jumped to the Atlantic 10 after three consecutive 20+ win seasons. The Hawks have remained with the Atlantic 10 since joining the league in 1982.

2022 Key Stats

Apart from the team statistics mentioned above, the Hawks appear to have some nice players when you look at just counting statistics.

Sophomore wing Jordan Hall is a stat sheet stuffer averaging over 16 points, rebounds, and six assists per game. He also gets 1.5 steals on the defensive end of the floor and shoots over 37 percent from beyond the three-point line.

Taylor Funk is a senior forward who provides solid numbers across the board. The 6’8 big man is tied for the team lead at 7.3 rebounds per game and also offers 13.7 points per game. He shoots the ball efficiently from in close and out deep.

The problem is that Funk is hoisting over seven three-point attempts per game, which is likely a function of Billy Lange’s system.

If the Hawks could buckle down a bit on defense, they have the ability and talent to win some games. Saint Joes ranks 246th in the nation in points against per game and has a defensive team rating of 99.6, which ranks 220th in the nation.

Saint Joseph’s Championships

While the Hawks program has not been finishing towards the top of the Atlantic 10 in recent years, their program’s history is rich in tradition. Saint Joseph’s has won 20 conference championships during the regular season. All of those conference championships came between the 1959 season and their most recent championship of 2005.

The Hawks have also won six conference tournament championships, with the first coming in 1981 and the most recent coming in 2016. The program has been to the NCAA Tournament 21 times with an overall record of 19-25. They have never won an NCAA Championship but have made the Final Four once in their history, in 1961.

The program has also participated in the postseason National Invitational Tournament sixteen times. They have finished second twice and third once but have never won the tournament.

Important Saint Joseph’s Events

Saint Joseph’s took the college basketball landscape by storm during the 2003-04 season when they put a perfect regular season record on the board. The Hawks went a perfect 30-0 during the regular season behind one of the most talented backcourts in the history of the Atlantic Conference.

Jameer Nelson and Delonte West would both go on the play in the NBA, but only after they led the program to a number one seed and an A-10 regular season championship.

That team would lose in the regional final but would still find themselves ranked in the top five in the final AP Poll. Both Nelson and West would leave for the NBA after the season.

In 1955, the program hired John Ramsay, or as he is more affectionately known: Dr. Jack Ramsay. Dr. Jack led the program for eleven seasons, compiling a 234-72 and winning eight MAC regular season conference championships.

Top Players in Program History

It is hard to deny that Jameer Nelson is the best player ever to lead the program. Nelson played all four seasons under Phil Martelli at Saint Joseph’s and averaged over 16 points per game in 125 games played.

He started every single game during his career and never averaged fewer than 33.8 minutes per game. His 2,094 career points are the 11th most points scored in Atlantic 10 conference history.

Hybrid forward DeAndre Bembry would likely be the next logical choice for the best player to come through the program. Bembry was a big wing forward that had good ball skills and the ability to score from all three levels.

Bembry was the A–10 player of the year during the 2015-16 season when he averaged 17.4 points per game, and 7.8 rebounds along with 4.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He averaged north of 37 minutes per game during his sophomore and junior seasons.

Historical Coaches

The program has had its fair share of stars on the court, but they have also made fantastic hires for their bench. Obviously, Dr. Jack Ramsay was the first great choice in the program’s history, but you have to pay homage to one of the programs first coaches, Billy Ferguson.

Ferguson led the program from 1929-1953 and compiled 309 victories. Because Saint Joseph’s was an independent program at the time, they were not competing for regular season and conference tournament championships.

Following many years that were fair to midland, (though there were some great seasons under Jim Boyle), the program hired Phil Martelli in 1995.

Martelli was an assistant at St. Joes for ten years before taking the big seat. He would lead the program to six regular season championships, three conference tournament championships, and seven NCAA Tournament appearances.

Martelli is the all-time leader in coaching wins at Saint Josephs’ with 444 wins and a 57.5 percent winning percentage. The Hawks program has been his only division one head coaching post.
