TEAM LEADERS

San Diego Toreros

Team Summary

The San Diego Toreros are a men’s college basketball team that competes in the suddenly tough West Coast Conference. As this league has started to become deeper and more loaded with talented teams, San Diego has simply not been able to keep pace.

The Toreros first started playing college basketball in the 1950s and this program has really struggled to maintain periods of success. San Diego has made just four NCAA Tournament appearances, but the most recent one was all the way back in 2008.

This school was recently caught in the middle of a scandal, although it wasn’t one that had a major impact on the basketball program. The 2021-22 season for San Diego has actually started off better than expected, and that is going to create some interesting betting options.

Don’t expect to see San Diego ever becoming an annual threat to win the West Coast Conference, but they have had some years where they have been a factor in that league.

Team History

1955 was the first year in which there was men’s college basketball played at the University of San Diego. Things didn’t get off to a very good start for the Toreros basketball program, and that has been a consistent theme over time.

San Diego won their first-ever conference title back in 1984 when the conference was actually called the West Coast Athletic Conference. The three other NCAA Tournament appearances for the Toreros came in 1987, 2003, and 2008.

Since the West Coast Conference implemented a conference tournament, San Diego has won that title just two times (2003 and 2008). The only NCAA Tournament victory for this program came during the 2008 season, and the team bowed out in the round of 32.

Former head coach Lamont Smith was caught in the middle of the scandal that dealt with college admissions and bribery back in 2019. San Diego has won over 50 percent of their games since first starting to play college basketball, but there just haven’t been any really dominant teams.

2022 Key Stats

The 2021-22 version of the San Diego Toreros have gone 8-7 through their first 15 games. San Diego is scoring just over 67 points per game while holding opponents to 62 points per night.

Guard Marcellus Earlington leads the current San Diego team with 13.5 points per game, and he is making nearly 40 percent of his three-point attempts. Guard Jase Townsend is shooting over 46 percent from deep and he is averaging over 11 points per game.

The Toreros are shooting just 44 percent from the field overall, but they are making 36 percent of their three-point attempts.

Championships Won by the Team

There is not a long list of championships won by San Diego, and the Toreros have never been a real threat to win the NCAA Tournament. Reaching the Round of 32 in 2008 and winning one game was an accomplishment that is still celebrated by this program.

San Diego has won the WCC Tournament twice in 2003 and 2008, and each victory came with a trip to March Madness. The Toreros also won the conference title back in 1984, but there wasn’t a conference tournament at that time.

San Diego has made some big runs in the CIT, reaching the quarterfinals in both 2014 and 2018.

Important Team Events

The NCAA Tournament is the biggest event of the season for any men’s college basketball team, but the Toreros don’t realistically have a shot of getting into that field very often. San Diego does get an automatic entry into the West Coast Conference Tournament each season, and winning that guarantees them an automatic berth.

The biggest rival of San Diego is the San Diego State Aztecs, and that becomes a top game every season. During the 2012-13 season, this rivalry was actually played outdoors at Petco Park, becoming just one of four games in that decade to be played outside.

Top Players

There is not a strong history when it comes to San Diego Toreros basketball, and most of the top players have all played at the school recently. The four leading scorers in the history of San Diego basketball have all played at the school since 2005.

Johnny Dee is the all-time leading scorer at San Diego, racking up 2,046 points during his time in a Torerors uniform. Brandon Johnson was next on the list with 1,790 points, and he fell just shy of climbing to the top of the list.

Johnson’s teammate Gyno Pomare gave the Toreros a solid 1-2 punch from 2005-2009 as he tallied over 1,700 career points as well. Olin Carter III played at San Diego from 2015-2019 and scored 1,558 points during his career.

Top Coaches

There have been 13 different full-time head coaches at the University of San Diego, including current coach Sam Scholl. Five different head coaches were able to win at least 90 games at the school, and seven different coaches posted a winning percentage of .500 or better.

The top coach in the history of San Diego is pretty clear, and it is head coach Brad Holland. Holland guided the team from 1994-2007 and was able to rack up 200 wins during that time.

Bill Grier was able to take the players leftover from those Holland teams and guide the Toreros back to the NCAA Tournament in 2008, and they actually picked up a victory. Current head coach Sam Scholl won 23 of his first 38 games at San Diego and he could be moving up the ranks of top coaches in a hurry.
