Seton Hall Pirates

Team Summary

The 2021-22 version of Seton Hall is one talented and willing to take one all comers. Predicted to finish fifth in the preseason Big East poll, the Pirates have shown they may be capable of much more during an 11-3 start. Seton Hall has already collected victories over then No. 4 Michigan and then No. 7 Texas. The Pirates also gave an Ohio State team that is ranked a battle, only losing by three points.

Seton Hall appears to be returning to form under 1th-year coach Kevin Williard. Seton Hall, which had a long stretch of success in the late 1980s and early 1990s, had a long period of struggles. However, since 2016 the Pirates have returned to promise, earning four trips to the NCAA Tournament. Seton Hall was one of the founding members of the Big East conference in 1979-80 and has never left despite the amount of heavy realignment within college sports.

Team History

Seton Hall has been playing basketball but didn’t start having success at the NCAA Tournament level, making its first appearance in the big tournament in 1988 and the Pirates have now made 13 appearances. During its early history, Seton Hall was much more involved with the NIT, which once rivaled the NCAA Tournament in terms of prestige. The Pirates made 17 appearances in that tournament, including three trips to the semifinals and one championship in 1953.

As one of the smallest schools in the Big East, Seton Hall took its lumps on its way to becoming a successful program. The Pirates finally broke through in 1989. Entering as a No. 3 seed, Seton Hall upset a number of blue bloods on the way to the NCAA Final. The Pirates beat Indiana, UNLV, and Duke to reach the final. Seton Hall narrowly lost to Michigan, 80-79, in overtime of the championship game.

2022 Key Stats

Seton Hall guard Jared Rhoden leads the team by averaging 16.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. The Pirates make 7.3 3-pointers per game and shot 31.9 percent from the perimeter. Forward Tyler Jackson, who is the team’s most efficient 3-pointer shooter by making 38.2 percent of his attempts, averages 7.1 points per game. Guard Bryce Aiken (12.9 points per game) and forward Tyrese Same (10.5) also average in double figures for Seton Hall.

The Pirates average 78.1 points per game and shoot 45 percent from the field. The Pirates outrebound their opponents by an average margin of 4.0 per game. Seton Hall forces its opponents into 13.4 turnovers per game, while only committing 10.7 themselves.

Championships Won by the Team

Seton Hall has won the Big East Tournament three times: 1991, 1993, and 2016. The Pirates also collected regular-season conference championships in 1992, 1993, and 2020. After reaching the semifinals in 1941 and 1951, Seton Hall broke through and won the NIT in 1953. The Pirates outlasted Niagara 79-74 in the first round before beating Manhattan 74-56 and St. John’s 58-46 on the way to a title.

When Seton Hall won its most recent Big East Tournament title in 2016, the Pirates ended up as a third seed. The Pirates beat Creighton and Xavier to reach the final against perennial power and No. 1 ranked Villanova. Seton Hall would take down the Wildcats 69-67 to win its first conference tournament title in 23 years. Yet no win on March Madness.

Important Team Events

Seton Hall went into the Kingdom on April 3, 1989, to play Michigan for the NCAA Championship. The Pirates were faced with finding a way to stop Michigan star Glen Rice, who would go on to a long NBA career. While Seton Hall didn’t find a way to stop Rice, he finished with 34 points and 11 rebounds, they didn’t make life easy on the Wolverines.

Seton Hall rallied behind John Morton’s 35 points and overcame a five-point Michigan lead at halftime to force overtime. The Pirates led Michigan by three with less than a minute left in overtime. The Wolverines cut the lead to one on a Terry Mills jumper. When Seton Hall couldn’t score, the Wolverines held for the last shot. Michigan was able to draw a foul with 3 seconds left. Rumeal Robinson made both free throws to give the Wolverines an 80-79 victory.

Top Players

Walter Dukes, a 7-foot center from Rochester, N.Y., would help lead Seton Hall to the NIT championship in 1953 and was named NIT MVP. Duke’s professional basketball career was a wild one. He started with the Harlem Globetrotters before eventually playing an eight-year career in the NBA split between the New York Knicks, Minneapolis Lakers, and Detroit Pistons. As an NBA player, Dukes was a two-time all-star. When Dukes left the league, he was averaging 10.4 points and 11.3 rebounds per game as a career average.

John Morton helped lead Seton Hall to the NCAA finals in 1989 and was selected in the first round of the NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Morton’s NBA career was brief and he ended up experiencing more success overseas. Morton led the Spanish League in scoring in 1996 and 1997.

Top Coaches

PJ Carlesimo is second all-time on Seton Hall’s wins list with a 212-166 record. Carlesimo was given time to have growing pains during the Pirates’ transition to the Big East. He was 6-23 in his first season and didn’t make the NCAA Tournament until the 1987-88 season, which was his sixth season with the program. That time paid dividends in his final five seasons. In addition to leading Seton Hall to the finals in 1989, the Pirates went to the Elite Eight in 1991 and the Sweet 16 in 1992. Carlesimo would go on to have a long career coaching in the NBA and would win three NBA titles as an assistant.

John Russell is Seton Hall’s all-time wins leader, collecting 295 victories between two tenures as coach from 1936-1943 and from 1949 to 190. Current coach Kevin Williard has 216 victories as coach of the Pirates. Willard made the NCAA Tournament in four consecutive seasons from 2015 to 2019. Willard may have had another berth in the 2019-2020 season, but the Big East Tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
