St. John’s Red Storm

Team Summary

Being the premier college basketball team in New York City has its share of challenges for St. John’s. The expectation for the long-time Big East Conference team is that they are able to keep a few of the best kids from New York’s deep recruiting pool to make runs at the NCAA Tournament. But in the new millennium, that’s not how things have gone for the Red Storm.

COVID-19 precautions and being in one of the nation’s most competitive conferences is likely to keep St. John’s on the sideline of the NCAA Tournament again this season. The Red Storm, which started the season 9-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference, had four games postponed due to issues with the virus. The Red Storm fell short of picking up a marquee win when it fell by two points to Indiana in the non-conference schedule.

Team History

St. John’s has had long periods of sustained success. The Red Storm were successful long before it became one of seven inaugural members to join the Big East in the 1979-80 season. St. John’s first season as a program was in 1907 and the Red Storm rank ninth all-time in total wins with 1,871. When it comes to team success, the Red Storm were awarded a national championship in 1911 before the establishment of preseason tournaments.

St. John’s had a 30-year run with the Metropolitan New York Conference that ended when the league dissolved in 1963. The Red Storm would go back to being independent in the years following before they joined up with other eastern schools to land in the Big East. Moving to the new conference revitalized the program, as the Red Storm made eight trips to the NCAA Tournament in the 1980s.

St. John’s would also go to the NCAA Tournament six times in the 1990s before the wheels fell off the program. The Red Storm has been hit with a lot of coaching turnover and turmoil since 2000. St. John’s last made the tournament in 2019 and has only gone five times since 2000.

2022 Key Stats

Julian Champagnie has been St. John’s best player during the 2021-2022 season, averaging 21.2 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. The Red Storm has two other players — Posh Alexander (15.4 points per game) and Dylan Addae-Wusu (10.0) — averaging in double figures. The Red Storm plays at an up-tempo pace, scoring 82.1 points per game. However, St. John’s defense sometimes is prone to lapses against opponents that can also score. The Red Storm allows opposing offenses to score 74.4 points per game.

St. John’s has struggled from the free-throw line this season, making 66.9 percent of its attempts. The Red Storm have also struggled on the glass, only holding a .3 edge in rebounding margin. St. John’s makes 7.9 3-pointers per game and shoots 35.9 percent from the perimeter. They better work this out before getting into the March Madness.

Championships Won by the Team

St. John’s has been one of the most successful programs in the history of the NIT. The Red Storm won championships in 1943, 1944, 1959, 1989, and 2003. While the 2003 championship was later violated due to rules being broken, St. John’s holds a 45-30 record in the event. The Red Storm’s only NCAA title came via a vote in the pre-tournament era.

Since joining the Big East in 1979, St. John’s won the conference tournament in 1983, 1986, and 2000. While in the Metropolitan New York Conference, the Red Storm compiled nine regular-season titles. St. John’s won back-to-back metro titles in 1946-47, 1951-52, and 1961-62.

The Red Storm also reached the finals of the 1952 NCAA Tournament. St. John’s beat NC State, Kentucky, and Illinois on the way to the finals. The Red Storm met its match when it went up against Kansas and coach Phog Allen in the finals. The Jayhawks picked up a comfortable 80-63 victory to allow Allen to grab his first title.

Important Team Events

St. John’s most successful post 1980-team came in a season where the Big East were truly kings of basketball. The NCAA final in 1985 featured a Villanova upset win over Georgetown. But those weren’t the only teams from the conference who joined the party.

The Red Storm, then known as the Redmen, finished 31-4 and reached the Final Four for the second time in their history. Led by future NBA players Chris Mullin and Bill Wennington, the Red Storm beat Southern, Arkansas, Kentucky, and NC State to reach the Final Four. The Red Storm would meet their match with Georgetown. The Hoyas handed St. John’s three of its four losses that season.

Top Players

When Chris Mullin finished at St. John’s in 1985, there was little doubt he had left behind a large legacy. When Mullin graduated, he was the program’s all-time leading scorer with 2,440 points. He was also one of only three players in history to win the Haggerty Award, which was given to the best collegiate player in the New York City area. He was also named Big East Player of the Year three straight years, from 1983 to 1985. As a senior, Mulling averaged 19.8 points per game.

Wennington, who played with Mullin, would go on to play in the NBA for a career that spanned from 1985 to 2000. Wennington would win three NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls. Mark Jackson was also on the 1985 St. John’s team. Jackson would have a long career as a successful NBA point guard with the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers. He would also have success as a coach with the Golden State Warriors.

Top Coaches

Lou Carnesecca was a colorful character who won 526 games in two separate tenures with St. John’s Carnesssca took three years’ absence from the program to coach the New York Nets of the ABA, where he helped the Nets reach the ABA finals but finished with a 114-138 record. But it was with the Red Storm that Carnesecca shined.

During his tenure, St. John’s won five Big East regular-season championships, the Big East Tournament twice, and the 1989 NIT title. The Red Storm also reached 1985 Final Four behind a powerful lineup filled with future NBA players.
