Stanford Cardinal Team History

Stanford began their collegiate basketball team as an independent program back in the 1913 regular season and only were independents for three seasons before joining the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) before the 1916-17 season. They never left as the conference morphed into the Athletic Association of Western Universities (AAWU), Pac-8, Pac-10, and eventually the Pac-12 Conference.

They have been a solid team throughout their run as they have been able to win throughout their existence, including a solid record in postseason play during the NCAA Championship. They were able to win their singular National Championship during the 1942 NCAA Tournament, so they have been a successful program throughout their history.

Key Stats

The Stanford program has been decent thus far during the 2022 season as they are 10-5 (3-2) so far and are trying to take that next step as a program. They are 258th in the country, averaging 69.8 points per game as a team, and have recorded 13.9 assists per game, which tied for 167th in the United States.

Their rebounding has been one of their best attributes as they are tied for 112th with 38 rebounds per game. Freshman forward Harrison Ingram has been taking charge this season as he is averaging 11.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 0.9 steals in 29.7 minutes per game.

Their biggest issue as a team has been that they are averaging 15.7 turnovers and missing out on a lot of scoring opportunities throughout games.

Championships Won by the Team

Stanford has been able to win 11 conference championships since its inception and won the conference tournament a single time. They also were able to win the National Championship one time in their 107-year history.

They were the first team to win back-to-back conference championships in the now-Pac-12 as they won in the 1919 and 1920 seasons. The Cardinal also won three consecutive years from 1935-37. Stanford also managed to win the 1941 Conference Championship.

The Cardinal have only won a singular National Championship as they defeated the Dartmouth Big Green 53-38 in March 1942.

They won the conference in 1952, 1998-2000, and in 2003 (in which they also won the conference tournament). That means they were able to lock in the Pac-12 at large bid for the NCAA Tournament and not have to wait for Selection Sunday.

Important Team Events

March 28, 1942, is a date that many Stanford Cardinal fans know as it was the only NCAA National Championship that the program has captured. They were inside the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri, and squared off against the Dartmouth Big Green.

The game was extremely close heading into the half as Stanford was clinging to a 24-22 lead but head coach Everett Dean must have said something to inspire them as they went on a 29-16 run in the second half to win 53-38 and capture their first ever NCAA National Championship.

The Cardinal were led by Howard Dallmar, who finished with a game-high 15 points and was one of three players to score double-digits (Jack Dana scored 14 and Ed Voss finished with 13).

Unfortunately, this was the only National Title game Stanford would compete in, but they have gotten close in the past, hopefully this year everything changes for them in the March Madness Tournament.

Top Players

One player that we will talk about here is guard Chasson Randle, who played for Stanford from 2011-2015 and averaged 16.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game throughout his career. He is the current leader in games played (144), field goal attempts (1,775), three-point field goals (304), three-point field goal attempts (787), points (2,375), and offensive win shares (18.9) throughout his career.

Another incredible guard in his four seasons at Stanford was Brevin Knight, a three-time All-Pac-12 and the 1993-94 Pac-12 Rookie of the Year.

He completed his career averaging 14.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 6.8 assists, and 2.6 steals per game. He is currently holding the Stanford records for most assists in a season (234), assists per game (7.8), steals (83), and steals per game (2.8), so he was able to help solidify the backcourt without the basketball in his hands.

Top Coaches

There have been 18 head coaches throughout the program since the 1913-1914 regular season, and there have been a few very successful ones like Mike Montgomery. He coached for 18 seasons between 1987-2004 and is the current leader in program history in wins (392).

Montgomery led the program to four conference championships and their only conference tournament win, which was one of 12 times the Cardinal made the NCAA Tournament during his tenure. The team reached a Final Four during the 1998 NCAA Tournament but lost in the National Semifinal Game.

The other coach to speak about was Everett Dean, who coached Stanford from 1939-1951 and held a record of 167-120 during his 11 seasons.

He only managed to win a singular conference championship and made the NCAA Tournament that year, but no one was stopping them as the Cardinal won their only National Championship in the 1942 NCAA Tournament.
