Tulsa Golden Hurricane

Team Summary

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane men’s basketball team has gotten off to a very tough start as they are 6-10 to begin the 2021-22 college basketball season. They have really struggled in conference play so far this season as they are at the bottom of the American conference and are 0-5. In order to have a shot at making the NCAA tournament this season, they will likely have to win the rest of their regular-season games and make a big run in the conference tournament.

Tulsa has shown the ability to play well at times this year but just seems like they are very inconsistent. Once they right the ship they are going to be tough to beat and should not be overlooked. They have won some very tough games this season against very good opponents.

They are scoring 68.1 points per game and allowing 67.4 points per game so far this season. They are grabbing 30.9 rebounds and dishing off 11.7 assists per game. All of these marks are among the worst in the NCAA.

Tulsa Golden Hurricanes Team History

W.R. Bergen created Tulsa’s basketball program in 1907, while the institution was still known as Kendall College. In its first season, it went 1–1. The squad remained on sabbatical for several years after the 1908–09 season until returning in 1913–14 under Harvey Allen.

The school began playing games outside of Oklahoma in 1917, but did not have much success until Francis Schmidt became head coach in 1918; Schmidt led the school to a school-record 16 straight victories in the 1919–20 season. Until the arrival of Clarence Iba in 1949, the squad struggled and had only minor successes. The 1942–1943 winless side led by Mike Milligan, who finished 0–10, is particularly noteworthy.

In the 1953 NIT, Tulsa made their first appearance in the postseason under Iba. Iba led the Golden Hurricane to their first Missouri Valley Conference championship and entry in the NCAA tournament in 1955. In 1960, Joe Swank took over as Iba’s successor. Swank was the man who broke the color barrier in the Tulsa basketball program. Swank had a few winning seasons, but the program didn’t really take off until Nolan Richardson arrived.

The appointment of Nolan Richardson ushered in a new period of prosperity for Tulsa, which has remained pretty steady since then. In his first season at the school, he guided the team to the NIT Championship. During his five-year career, Richardson also won two MVC regular season and two MVC tournament championships. His theatrical personality made him tremendously famous.

  1. D. Barnett took over as Richardson’s successor and continued the team’s dominance, winning one tournament and one regular-season title while only finishing third in the conference once. However, due to the enormous increase in expectations at Tulsa as a result of Richardson’s performance, Barnett was fired.

Tubby Smith, who went on to coach at Kentucky, Georgia, and Minnesota, replaced Barnett. Smith spent four seasons at Tulsa, capturing two MVC titles and taking the team to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in the NCAA tournament in both the 1993–1994 and 1994–1995 seasons. Following Smith’s departure for Georgia, a slew of high-profile coaches stepped in. Before leaving for Florida State, Steve Robinson guided the club to straight NCAA berths.

Bill Self took over for Robinson for three seasons, winning two WAC titles in 1998–99 and 1999–00 and led Tulsa to its greatest record in school history, a 32–5 record in 1999–00. Tulsa had a #7 seed in the 2000 NCAA tournament and progressed to the Elite Eight.

Self left for Illinois, and Buzz Peterson took his place. Peterson guided the team to the NIT Championship in 2001 and went on to become the head coach at the University of Tennessee.

Tulsa Championships Won by the Team

Tulsa has never won an NCAA title and have only been as far as the Elite Eight once in their team history. They have won their conference tournament in the postseason six times and have won the regular-season conference crown 11 times.

Six of those conference titles were won when Tulsa was a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. The last conference title that Tulsa won was in 2020 which was their first conference title as a member of the American.

Tulsa has a very minimal shot of ever winning a national title but they have a good shot at winning conference titles. They have been a very successful program in the past and have continued that up to this point.

Tulsa Important Team Events

Tulsa does not have any big traditions but they do have some very important rivals. Wichita State University is Tulsa’s biggest basketball foe. The rivalry had waned significantly between the time Tulsa left the Missouri Valley Conference following the 1995 season and the time both teams entered the American Athletic Conference in 2017 when it was revived indefinitely by both institutions.

Oral Roberts University, which is located in southern Tulsa, has a minor rivalry with Tulsa. The teams have been playing yearly since 1974, and the rivalry has been generally one-sided. However, Oral Roberts has narrowed the gap considerably in recent years, and the two teams now compete once a year. The Mayor’s Cup, a traveling trophy, is awarded to the game’s winner. In 1997, Tulsa hired Bill Self from Oral Roberts.

In July 2014 when Tulsa joined the American Athletic Conference they rekindled old rivalries with Memphis, Cincinnati, SMU, and Houston. These rivalries are not as big as the ones with Wichita State and Oral Roberts but are generally much more competitive as they are old foes.

Tulsa Top Players

Tulsa has produced a number of outstanding players, many of whom have gone on to play in the NBA. Gary Collier, the 1994 MVC player of the year, Michael Scott, the 1989 and 1991 MVC defensive player of the year, and Willie Biles, who led the MVC in scoring in both the 1972–73 and 1973–1974 seasons, are among the successful players who never made it to the NBA.

James King, who returned to coach the program after his NBA career, and Bingo Smith had the most success among those who did make it to the NBA. King was named to the 1968 NBA All-Star Game, and Smith’s number was retired by the Cleveland Cavaliers after he scored more than 10,000 points in his career. Steve Bracey was a part of the Golden State Warriors’ NBA championship squad in 1974–75.

Tulsa Top Coaches

When Clarence Iba, Henry’s brother, was hired head coach in 1949, he helped propel Tulsa to prominence. He coached at Tulsa for 11 years, the longest of any Tulsa coach, and is the school’s second-winningest coach with 137 victories in 11 seasons.

When Nolan Richardson was appointed in 1980, he is credited with bringing the Tulsa program to national attention, leading the school to the 1981 NIT Championship and a .763 winning percentage. In his first two seasons, he became the first coach in NCAA history to win 50 games.

Tubby Smith, Buzz Peterson, and Bill Self were among the Tulsa coaches who moved on to big-name teams around the country in the 1990s and 2000s. Despite a succession of coaches, the club remained successful.

Doug Wojcik, who coached from 2005 to 2012, is the school’s all-time winningest coach with 140 victories. Billy Gillispie, Flip Saunders, Kevin O’Neill, Mike Anderson, Ron Jirsa, and Jerry Wainwright are some of the program’s notable assistants.
