Utah State started playing in the 1903-1904 season. It was an independent program until the 1923 season when they joined the Mountain States Athletic Conference, also known as the Skyline Conference, and the NCAA Division I. They finished that season with a 6-6 record and were 3-5 in the conference under head coach Dick Romney.

The team made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1939 and has played in a total of twenty-two tournaments to date, making it to the Sweet Sixteen on three different occasions. In their last tournament appearance in 2021, they lost to Texas Tech in the first round, 65-53.

There have been twenty coaches in Utah State Men’s basketball history, with the first being Peter Campbell in the 1904 season. He led the team through 1907, finishing with a 6-15 record three seasons as head coach.

Utah State also competed in the Collegeinsider.com Tournament (CIT) in 2012. They made it all the way to the championship game, where they lost to Mercer 70-67.

The Utah State Aggies have had numerous outstanding players in their history, many that have gone on to play in the NBA. Nine former players in total went on to have careers in the league.

The best known of these is probably Nate Miller, who played for nine seasons on several NBA teams. His NBA career finished with him averaging 12 points and four rebounds per game. The most recent former Aggie to be drafted into the NBA was Neemius Queta, who was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in 2021.

Jaycee Carroll is the all-time leading scorer for the Aggies, finishing his career at the school with 2522 points between 1982-1983 and 1985-1986. He also holds the Aggies’ career records for minutes played and field goal attempts.

The former player with the highest career points per game is Wayne Estes, who had 26.7 points per game average for Utah State between 1962 and 1965. He is also the only Consensus All-American to ever play for the Aggies, making the second team in 1965.

The Aggies have retired five numbers in their history. Estes’ number 33 was retired after the 1965 season. The last number to be retired was that of Greg Grant, whose number five jersey was retired after his career between 1983 and 1986.

The coach with the most wins for Utah State is Stew Morrill, who led the team for seventeen seasons from 1999 to 2015. He won a total of 402 games, and his teams won seven regular-season conference championships and six conference tournament championships.

With Morrill at the helm, the team made eight NCAA Tournament appearances. He ended his career at Utah State with a .720 winning percentage. He is second only to Craig Smith, who finished his career with a .755 winning percentage in 98 games.
