Washington State Cougars History

The program began as an independent team from 1901 until joining the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) beginning the 1915 season. They were members of the conference until the conclusion of the 1958 season and became independent once again for four years until joining the Athletic Association of Western Universities (AAWU) before the 1963 regular season.

The Cougars have been members of the conference ever since as they have rebranded from the AAWU to the Pac-8, the Pac-10, and now the Pac-12 Conference.

Key Stats

The Washington State Cougars have been a decent program this season but are sitting at eighth in the Pac-12 Conference as they are 10-7 (3-3) so far this year. However, they are not passing the ball well as they are 402nd with 10.9 assists per game.

They have been able to use their size well as Washington State is averaging 38.7 rebounds per game, which is 81st in the United States. If they can continue to improve offensively, they will be able to improve.

Championships Won by the Team

The Washington State Cougars have won just two total conference championships in their history as Washington State won the 1916 and 1940 Pacific Coast Conference Champions. Since then, the program has not been able to win a conference championship but made the NCAA Tournament in six seasons throughout their history.

Important Team Events

The biggest game in the history of the Washington State Cougars was on March 29, 1941, in the National Championship Game in the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri. The Wisconsin Badgers faced off against the Washington State Cougars but the Cougars were unable to get going as they were down 21-17 going into halftime. However, the Badgers were able to win the game 39-34 and win the National Championship in 1941. Kirk Gebert led all the players in the game as he finished with 21 points.

Top Players

One of the most notable players to come out of the program is shooting guard Klay Thompson, as he was there from 2008-2010 and appeared in 98 games (96 starts) and finished with 17.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game. Top Coaches

Despite coaching for 30 years, he only managed a single conference championship and went to the NCAA Tournament and managed to get into the Final Four that season but failed to win that game to make it to the National Championship Game.

The only other coach to bring the Cougars to the NCAA Tournament was J. Fred Bohler. He coached Washington State from 1909-1926 and managed to have a record of 226-177 during that span. They won a conference championship but there was no NCAA Tournament at the time so they were unable to compete. None of them have managed to make to the March Madness.
