Team History

Many celebrated names have come through the campus throughout the program’s history, including Grant Hill, J.J. Redick, Christian Laettner, Kyrie Irving, Zion Williamson, and countless others, which is a huge reason why this program has five national championships to its name.

Their biggest rival is the North Carolina Tar Heels, as North Carolina leads their all-time head-to-head battles 141-114, which will be extremely hard for Duke to catch up to given that these two teams only play each other twice a year.

The last time Duke has won a National Championship was back in 2015, as Jahlil Okafor, Justise Winslow, and Tyus Jones were all instrumental in bringing that championship home.

Duke’s last championship came in 2015 when they took down the Wisconsin Badgers 68-63. Tyus Jones led the way with 23 points. Grayson Allen scored 16 points off the bench. Justise Winslow added 11 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. Jahlil Okafor had 10 points.

Duke won its fourth championship in 2010, defeating the Butler Bulldogs 61-59, as Kyle Singler led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds. In 1991, Duke defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 72-65, as Christian Laettner led the way with 18 points and ten rebounds. Bill McCaffrey added 16 points off the bench. Bobby Hurley had 12 points and nine rebounds. Grant Hill put in 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals.

Important Team Events

Christian Laettner hit a turnaround fadeaway shot at the buzzer to lift Duke to the victory over the Kentucky Wildcats in 1992 to send them to the National Championship game for the second time in two years, which led them to defeat Michigan for their second consecutive championship. Coach K became the first coach ever in the history of men’s Division I college basketball to win 1,000 games back on January 25, 2015, as they defeated the St. John’s Red Storm.

Christian Laettner is easily one of the best players in program history, hitting the biggest shot in Duke history and arguably one of the biggest ones of all time.

Laettner enjoyed a 13-year NBA career. He averaged 12.8 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game with stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, and Miami Heat. He was named an All-Star during the 1996-97 season.

J.J. Redick was the consensus national college basketball player of the year in 2006, as he averaged 26.8 points per game that season. Redick went on to play 15 years in the NBA, averaging 12.8 points per game for his career with stints with the Orlando Magic, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans, and Mavericks.

Grant Hill was the ACC Player of the Year in 1994, as he was a huge part of two championship runs during his four-year stay in Durham. Hill went on to play for 18 seasons in the NBA, posting career averages of 16.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game during stints with the Pistons, Magic, Phoenix Suns, and Clippers. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.

Jay Williams was the national college basketball player of the year back in 2002 and was a huge part of Duke’s championship run in 2001.

Kyrie Irving may have only played in 11 games for Duke, but he made enough of an impression to be still beloved by Duke fans, as he ultimately became the first overall pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2011. Irving is currently a seven-time All-Star, three-time All-NBA selection, and is still in the prime of his career with the Brooklyn Nets.

His ball-handling wizardry and layup package makes for exciting basketball to watch. Irving also hit arguably the biggest shot in NBA history, as his 3-pointer in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals gave the Cavs a 3-point lead and ultimately helped them clinch their first-ever championship.
