Duke Blue Devils

The Duke Blue Devils currently find themselves with a 12-2 record, as they’re ranked as the second-best team in the nation. Continue for more Duke Blue Devils Stats.

Led by Mike Krzyzewski, and in his final season as Duke’s head coach, they hope to win one last National Championship before Coach K rides off into the sunset.

They have the talent to get them that far, as Paolo Banchero and Wendell Moore have been carrying the load offensively for this team.

They’re 2-1 in conference play thus far this season, as they’ve defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets but took a loss to the Miami Hurricanes.

Duke is first in the ACC with a points per game average of 83.3, while their defense gives up 64.7 points a contest. Get all the information you need for this March Madness and Duke’s games.

However, they don’t get a heck of a lot of offense from behind the arc in comparison to their division foes, as they have only 114 3-pointers on the season.

Duke Blue Devils Stats

The Duke Blue Devils stats, a powerhouse in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) since the 1980s, boast a rich history steeped in tradition and excellence. Coached by legends like Mike Krzyzewski, better known as “Coach K,” the Blue Devils have captured five national championships, consistently ranking among the nation’s top teams. Their iconic Cameron Indoor Stadium, nicknamed “Cameron Crazies” for its fervent student fanbase, is known for its intimidating atmosphere for opposing teams. Throughout the years, Duke has produced numerous NBA stars and coaching talents, solidifying their place as one of the most respected programs in college basketball history. As of today, March 5th, 2024, the Blue Devils stand strong in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), aiming to add another chapter to their illustrious legacy.

Team History

Many celebrated names have come through the campus throughout the program’s history, including Grant Hill, J.J. Redick, Christian Laettner, Kyrie Irving, Zion Williamson, and countless others, which is a huge reason why this program has five national championships to its name.

Their biggest rival is the North Carolina Tar Heels, as North Carolina leads their all-time head-to-head battles 141-114, which will be extremely hard for Duke to catch up to given that these two teams only play each other twice a year.

The last time Duke has won a National Championship was back in 2015, as Jahlil Okafor, Justise Winslow, and Tyus Jones were all instrumental in bringing that championship home.

Throughout the program’s history, Duke has compiled a 2226-906 record with 43 tournament appearances, including 16 trips to the Final Four.

The Blue Devils program has been successful for decades, especially since Coach K took over in 1980.

Championships

Duke’s last championship came in 2015 when they took down the Wisconsin Badgers 68-63. Tyus Jones led the way with 23 points. Grayson Allen scored 16 points off the bench. Justise Winslow added 11 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks. Jahlil Okafor had 10 points.

Duke won its fourth championship in 2010, defeating the Butler Bulldogs 61-59, as Kyle Singler led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds. Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith added 15 and 13 points, respectively. Gordon Hayward nearly broke the hearts of Duke fans, as his half-court heave at the buzzer barely missed.

Duke topped the Arizona Wildcats 82-72 in 2001, as Mike Dunleavy led the way with 21 points. Shane Battier put up 18 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists. Jay Williams had 16 points, four assists, and three steals. Carlos Boozer came off the bench to score 12 points and grab 12 rebounds.

Duke took down the “Fab 5” Michigan Wolverines 71-51 in 1992 for back-to-back championships, taking down a team that consisted of Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson.

Christian Laettner led Duke with 19 points and seven rebounds. Grant Hill put in 18 points, ten rebounds, five assists, three steals, and two blocks. Thomas Hill added 16 points and seven rebounds.

In 1991, Duke defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 72-65, as Christian Laettner led the way with 18 points and ten rebounds. Bill McCaffrey added 16 points off the bench. Bobby Hurley had 12 points and nine rebounds. Grant Hill put in 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and two steals.

Important Team Events

Christian Laettner hit a turnaround fadeaway shot at the buzzer to lift Duke to the victory over the Kentucky Wildcats in 1992 to send them to the National Championship game for the second time in two years, which led them to defeat Michigan for their second consecutive championship. Many dub Laettner’s shot as the most incredible shot in history.

Coach K became the first coach ever in the history of men’s Division I college basketball to win 1,000 games back on January 25, 2015, as they defeated the St. John’s Red Storm.

The Duke-UNC rivalry is well documented, and what better way to make a statement in your first game in the rivalry than what Austin Rivers did in 2012, as he sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Duke a victory that shouldn’t have been theirs, and he did it in Chapel Hill.

Duke defeated the top-seeded UNLV Runnin’ Rebels in the 1991 National Semifinals 79-77 a year after that same team defeated them in the National Championship game. Christian Laettner led the way with 28 points.

Top Players

Christian Laettner is easily one of the best players in program history, hitting the biggest shot in Duke history and arguably one of the biggest ones of all time.

Laettner enjoyed a 13-year NBA career. He averaged 12.8 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game with stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Atlanta Hawks, Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, and Miami Heat. He was named an All-Star during the 1996-97 season.

J.J. Redick was the consensus national college basketball player of the year in 2006, as he averaged 26.8 points per game that season. Redick went on to play 15 years in the NBA, averaging 12.8 points per game for his career with stints with the Orlando Magic, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans, and Mavericks.

Grant Hill was the ACC Player of the Year in 1994, as he was a huge part of two championship runs during his four-year stay in Durham. Hill went on to play for 18 seasons in the NBA, posting career averages of 16.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game during stints with the Pistons, Magic, Phoenix Suns, and Clippers. He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.

Jay Williams was the national college basketball player of the year back in 2002 and was a huge part of Duke’s championship run in 2001.

Kyrie Irving may have only played in 11 games for Duke, but he made enough of an impression to be still beloved by Duke fans, as he ultimately became the first overall pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2011. Irving is currently a seven-time All-Star, three-time All-NBA selection, and is still in the prime of his career with the Brooklyn Nets.

His ball-handling wizardry and layup package makes for exciting basketball to watch. Irving also hit arguably the biggest shot in NBA history, as his 3-pointer in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals gave the Cavs a 3-point lead and ultimately helped them clinch their first-ever championship.
