Notre Dame has had many great players in school history, including Adrian Dantley, Austin Carr, Bill Laimbeer and several others.

The Fighting Irish have never won an NCAA Tournament, but they’ve been 36 times, with one trip to the Final Four, seven trips to the Elite Eight and 17 trips to the Sweet 16. Their lone trip to the Final Four came in 1978.

The Fighting Irish did earn two Helms Foundation National Championships, however, as they came in the years 1936 and 1927. They earned the selections retroactively in 1943, with the founders of the foundation, Bill Schroeder and Paul Helms, retroactively picking champions from the years 1919-20 through 1941-42.

Since their first season in 1890, they’ve compiled a 1,900-1,040 record throughout the course of their history.

Notre Dame advanced all the way to the Final Four in 1978 but lost to the Duke Blue Devils 90-86 in the Semi-Finals. On their run that season, they took down the Houston Cougars, Utah Utes and DePaul Blue Demons. Kelly Tripucka was their leading scorer in the tournament with 17.3 points per game.

Their most recent run to the Elite Eight came in 2016 until they lost to Roy Williams’ North Carolina Tar Heels. The Irish defeated the Michigan Wolverines, Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks and Wisconsin Badgers in their first three games of the tourney.

In 2015, they also made it to the Elite Eight, where they lost to the Kentucky Wildcats. To open the tournament they defeated the Northeastern Huskies, Butler Bulldogs and Wichita State Shockers. They still don’t have a major appearance in March Madness. They also won the ACC Tournament that season, defeating the North Carolina Tar Heels 90-82. Jerian Grant led the way with 24 points, as he was a huge part of their 26-3 run to close the game.

Top Players

In 1976 Adrian Dantley was the National Player of the Year, otherwise known as the Oscar Robertson trophy. He was a two-time consensus All-American and First Team Parade All-American. Dantley went on to enjoy a 15 year career in the NBA, with stints with the Buffalo Braves, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers, Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons and Dallas Mavericks. He was a six time All-Star, two time All-NBA Second Team selection and two-time scoring champion. He is in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Austin Carr was the Naismith College Player of the Year in 1971, as he enjoyed a three year stay with Notre Dame. He went on to play 10 seasons in the NBA, including stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Dallas Mavericks and Washington Bullets. He is a one time NBA All-Star.

Bill Laimbeer was a Second Team Parade All-American during his time at Notre Dame. He went on to play 13 seasons in the NBA, playing for both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons. He was a four time All-Star, two-time world champion and the 1986 rebounding leader.

Kelly Tripucka was a two time consensus All-American at Notre Dame. He went on to play 10 seasons in the NBA, playing for the Detroit Pistons, Utah Jazz and Charlotte Hornets. He was a two time All-Star.

Troy Murphy was a two time consensus First Team All-American during his time at Notre Dame. He went on to play 12 seasons in the NBA, including stints with the Golden State Warriors, Indiana Pacers, New Jersey Nets, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks.

Top Coaches

Current coach Mike Brey has been their longest tenured coach, as he’s currently in his 22nd season as the coach of the program. He was Coach of the Year in 2011, and Skip Prosser Man of the Year in 2008, which is awarded to a coach that displays strong moral character. Brey has a 448-248 record all-time as the coach of Notre Dame, which is the best in program history.

Digger Phelps is the second winningest coach in the history of Notre Dame, as he had a 393-197 record as the coach of the program. He was the head coach of the only team in program history to ever get as far as the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. He also shares the NCAA record for most upset wins over a #1 team at seven. Phelps took over as head coach of the program at just 29 years old.
