Syracuse has had many great players in school history, including Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Coleman, Dwayne “Pearl” Washington, Dave Bing and several others.

The Orange have won one NCAA Tournament, as they’ve been 41 times, with three trips to the National Championship game, six trips to the Final Four, 10 trips to the Elite Eight and 24 trips to the Sweet 16. Their lone championship was in 2003, as they defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 81-78. Carmelo Anthony led the way with 20 points, ten rebounds, and seven assists.

Since their first season in 1898, they’ve compiled a 2,042-931 record throughout their history.

Syracuse has had eight coaches in their history, with Jim Boeheim being the longest-tenured one. Boeheim has a 982-409 record during his time in Syracuse, which is the second-most all-time in NCAA history.

Prior to moving to the ACC, the Orange used to play in the Big East, as they developed longtime rivalries with the Georgetown Hoyas, Connecticut Huskies, and Villanova Wildcats.

Gerry McNamara dropped 18 points, as they all came in the form of six 3-pointers in the first half. Billy Edelin came off the bench to score 12 points. Kueth Duany chipped in 11 points.

The Orange led by 11 points halfway through the game, but Kansas made things interesting down the stretch. However, Hakim Warrick came from inside the paint and used his outstretched arms to block a 3-point attempt with 0.7 seconds left in the game, which ultimately helped clinch the win for Cuse.

Important Team Events

Syracuse got to their first ever National Championship game in 1987, but they took a close loss to the Indiana Hoosiers 74-73. On their run to the National Championship game, they defeated the Georgia Southern Eagles, Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, Florida Gators, North Carolina Tar Heels,first-ever, and Providence Friars.

Cuse got back to the National Championship nearly a decade later in 1996 but lost to the Kentucky Wildcats 76-67. They defeated the Montana State Bobcats, Drexel Dragons, Georgia Bulldogs, Kansas Jayhawks, and Mississippi State Bulldogs on their run.

2016 was a pretty magical year for the Orange, as they got themselves all the way to the Final Four. However, the North Carolina Tar Heels proved to be too tough to handle, as Syracuse took an 83-66 loss to them. The 10th seeded Orange took down the Dayton Flyers, Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders, Gonzaga Bulldogs, and #1 seeded Virginia Cavaliers on their run.

2013 was another great season for Syracuse, as they got all the way to the Final Four. However, the Michigan Wolverines took them down 61-56. They defeated the Montana Grizzlies, California Golden Bears, Indiana Hoosiers, and Marquette Golden Eagles on their run.

Top Players

Carmelo Anthony is responsible for the greatest moment in the history of the program, as it was his efforts that led the Orange to the National Championship victory in 2003. He was also named a consensus Second Team All-American during his freshman season at Cuse. Melo is currently playing with the Los Angeles Lakers, as he’s had stints with the Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, and Portland Trail Blazers.

He is a 10-time All-Star, six-time All-NBA, and 2013 scoring champion. Melo is universally praised by the city of Syracuse, as you won’t find a single person who hates him in that city, given the significance of what he’s done for the program.

Derrick Coleman was a First Team All-American in 1990, among several other accolades during his time at Cuse. Coleman was part of the team that went to the National Championship game in 1987.

Coleman went on to have a 15-year career in the NBA, which included stints with the New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Charlotte Hornets, and Detroit Pistons. He was a one-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA Third Team selection.

Dwayne “Pearl” Washington was one of the most electrifying players in Cuse history, as he mastered the “shake and bake” and was named a consensus Second Team All-American in 1985, among other accolades. Hall of Fame point guard John Stockton called Washington the hardest player he’s ever had to guard. Washington played three seasons in the NBA, two with the New Jersey Nets and one with the Miami Heat.

Dave Bing was named as a consensus First Team All-American in 1966, as he is one of the greatest players to ever play for the Orange. He went on to have a 12-year career in the NBA, with stints with the Detroit Pistons, Washington Bullets, and Boston Celtics. He is a seven-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA First Team selection.

Top Coaches

Jim Boeheim is one of the best basketball coaches in the history of the NCAA, as he’s spent 46 years in his current role as the head coach of the Syracuse Orange. Throughout that time, he’s compiled a 982-409 record and counting, as he’s responsible for taking this team to all three of their National Championship game appearances.

He’s been to the NCAA Tournament 33 times, getting the Orange to the Final Four five times, the Elite Eight seven times, and the Sweet 16 20 times. At this point, Boeheim is synonymous with Syracuse basketball.

Lew Andreas has the second-most wins in Syracuse history with a 358-135 record. He was also their football coach.
