That championship run was significant when you consider the fact that they became just the first number one seed in NCAA March Madness Tournament history to lose to a #16 seed the year before, as they lost to the UMBC Retrievers 74-54.

De’Andre Hunter led the way with 27 points and nine rebounds. Kyle Guy added 24 points.

Hunter’s 3-pointer down the stretch of the game tied things up for Virginia and gave them new life heading into overtime. Hunter came through again in the extra period to sink the go ahead 3-pointer with 2:10 left in the game, as the Cavs maintained the lead for the rest of the game en route to the championship.

On their run to the National Championship Game in 2019, Virginia took down the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon Ducks, Purdue Boilermakers and Auburn Tigers.

Important Team Events

The Cavs won the ACC Tournament back in 2018, as they took down the North Carolina Tar Heels 71-63. Kyle Guy was named the tournament MVP.

Virginia won their first ACC Tournament for the first time in 38 years in 2014, as they took down the Duke Blue Devils 72-63. Joe Harris was named the tournament MVP.

In 1976, Virginia won their first ever ACC Tournament, as they defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels 67-62. Wally Walker was named the tournament MVP.

Virginia reached its first Elite Eight for the first time in 21 years in 2016, but ended up losing to the Syracuse Orange. On their run, they defeated the Hampton Pirates, Butler Bulldogs and Iowa State Cyclones.

In 1984, Virginia got all the way to the Final Four, but ended up losing to the Houston Cougars. On their run, they defeated the Iona Gaels, Arkansas Razorbacks, Syracuse Orange and Indiana Hoosiers.

Top Players

Ralph Sampson was a three time College National Player of the Year, winning them consecutively from the years 1981-83. Sampson has the most rebounds in team history with 1,511 of them. He also has the most blocks with 462 of them. He went on to enjoy a nine year career in the NBA, with stints with the Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings and Washington Bullets. He was a four time All-Star.

Malcolm Brogdon was the ACC Player of the Year in 2016 and a three time member of the All-ACC First Team club. He currently plays for the Indiana Pacers, as he had a three season stint with the Milwaukee Bucks to open up his career. He became the lowest draft pick ever to win the NBA Rookie of the Year and is a member of the heralded 50-40-90 club.

De’Andre Hunter was a member of the First Team All-ACC and the ACC Defensive Player of the Year during his time there, as he hit some of the biggest shots in program history in the 2019 Championship Game. He currently plays for the Atlanta Hawks.

Kyle Guy was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player after he hit three straight free throws against Auburn with 0.6 seconds left in the game. He also had 24 points in the National Championship Game against Texas Tech. He was Third Team All-American and two time First Team All-ACC. He currently plays for the Miami Heat.

Top Coaches

Tony Bennett is responsible for leading the program to their first ever championship, as he has compiled a 295-103 record since he took over the team in 2009. In his third year with the program, he led Virginia to 22 wins, their most in 17 years, which included a trip to the tournament, which was their first in five. Bennett earned the Henry Iba Award in 2014-15.

Terry Holland has the most wins in program history, as he has a 326-173 record. He took the team to two Final Fours and has won two ACC Coach of the Year Awards.

Henry Lannigan is the longest tenured coach with 24 seasons under his belt, as he had a 254-95 record.

Gus Tebell is the second longest tenured coach, as he had a 241-190 record.
