The Hokies have never won the NCAA Tournament, but they’ve been 12 times, with one trip to the Elite Eight and two trips to the Sweet 16. Their lone trip to the Elite Eight came in 1967. They last got to the Sweet 16 in 2019.

Top Players

Dell Curry was the 1986 Metro Conference Player of the Year and a three-time First Team All-Conference selection during his time at Virginia Tech. He is second in scoring in team history with 2,389 points and first in steals with 295 of them. Curry went on to play 16 seasons in the NBA, with stints with the Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, Charlotte Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Toronto Raptors. He was the 1994 NBA Rookie of the Year. Dell is the father of Stephen Curry, who is the only unanimous MVP in NBA history.

Bimbo Coles was the Metro Conference Co-Player of the Year in 1988, as well as a three-time member of the First Team All-Metro Conference. He has the most points in Virginia Tech history with 2,484 points and second-most assists with 547 of them. Coles went on to play 14 seasons in the NBA, with stints with the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, Atlanta Hawks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Boston Celtics.

Justin Robinson was named to the First Team Parade All-American in 2018 and Second Team All-ACC in 2018. He has the most assists in program history with 562 of them. Robinson was a part of the team that got to the Sweet 16 in 2019. Robinson last played for the Detroit Pistons, as he also has had stints with the Sacramento Kings, Milwaukee Bucks, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Washington Wizards.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker was named to the Third Team All-ACC in 2019, as he was a huge part of the team that got to the Sweet 16 in 2019. He currently plays for the New Orleans Pelicans.

Top Coaches

Charles Moir has the most wins in program history with a 213-109 record, as he has the longest tenure as their head coach with 11 seasons under his belt. They had just two NCAA Tournament appearances with him as head coach, earning just two wins. They defeated the Jacksonville Dolphins 70-53 in the first round in 1979 and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 89-85 in overtime in the first round in 1980.

Seth Greenberg has the second-best record in program history with a 170-123 record. Greenberg took them to the NCAA Tournament just once, as they defeated the Illinois Fighting Illini 54-52 in the first round in 2007.

Buzz Williams went 100-69 in his five seasons with the team, coaching from 2014-19. He took Virginia Tech to three straight NCAA Tournaments, the first time that has ever happened in the history of the program. They got as far as the Sweet 16 in 2019, the first time they got that far in over 50 years. They took down the Saint Louis Billikens and Liberty Flames before losing to the Duke Blue Devils 75-73.
