Team History

The 1908–09 season was the first for LSU men’s basketball. The program’s debut game was a 35–20 triumph against Dixon Academy on the road. The program’s first home game was an 18–12 victory over Mississippi State.

For the 1934–35 season, LSU claimed a national title, but not on the basis of any external selector’s decision or the conclusion of any game ostensibly determining a national champion.

LSU has appeared in four Final Fours in the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship competition. The Tigers are 0-6 in Final Four appearances, with losses in the third-place game in 1953 and 1981. After LSU’s 78-74 loss to Virginia in 1981, the third-place game was dropped.

Since joining the Southeastern Conference as a founding member in 1933, LSU has won 11 conference titles and one conference tournament championship. The Tigers have made 23 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. They have a 27–26 record as a team.

Prior to being seeded, LSU competed in the NCAA Tournaments in 1953 and 1954. Along with George Mason in 2006, Virginia Commonwealth in 2011, Loyola-Chicago in 2018, and UCLA in 2021, the 1986 squad was one of the lowest-seeded teams ever to reach the Final Four.

LSU has never won a National Championship and has only won the conference postseason tournament. They have been the conference regular season champion 11 times, and last did it in 2019. LSU has been to the Final Four four times in their history but have never been to the National Championship game nor a March Madness one.

Important Team Events

The LSU Tiger Girls were formed as a dance line for the LSU basketball teams, both men’s and women’s. The all-female squad performs during home games and other university and non-university-sponsored activities. In contests sanctioned by the Universal Dance Association, the Tiger Girls compete against other university dance teams.

The LSU cheerleaders perform during men’s and women’s basketball games and are made up of both male and female cheerleaders. During gameplay and breaks, the cheerleaders lead the crowd in a chorus of cheers.

For home basketball games, the cheerleaders are stationed near the baseline. In contests sanctioned by the Universal Cheerleaders Association, LSU’s cheerleaders compete against cheering groups from other institutions (UCA). The Tiger cheerleaders won the UCA National Championship in 1989.

The Bengal Brass Basketball Band, often known as Bengal Brass, is made up of 72 members picked from the band’s ranks. This ensemble of musicians (together with a drummer on a drum set) performs in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center at LSU select home volleyball matches, many home gymnastics meets, all home men’s basketball games, and all home women’s basketball games.

Bengal Brass joins the men’s and women’s basketball teams during playoff play. Dr. Cliff Croomes, associate director of bands, leads the group.

Top Players

Shaquille O’Neal won two All-American and two SEC Player of the Year titles during his time at Louisiana State University. He won the Adolph Rupp Trophy for NCAA men’s basketball player of the year in 1991. O’Neal left LSU to enter the NBA draft, where he was chosen first overall in 1992.

Despite his NBA career, he pursued his study and was eventually inducted into the LSU Hall of Fame.

Pete Maravich stunned the basketball world when he debuted against Southeastern Louisiana College, scoring 50 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists. Maravich scored 3,667 points in his three years at LSU.

The first overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, Ben Simmons only spent one year at LSU. In his first game, he had 11 points and 13 rebounds. In their first loss to Marquette, he recorded 21 points, 20 rebounds, and seven assists.

His outstanding performance continued in a win over North Florida, when he had 43 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists, five steals, and three blocks. Since O’Neal’s 43 points in 1991, this was the most points scored by a Tigers player.

In 2006, Glen Davis was chosen to the All-SEC first team. He was named 2006 SEC Player of the Year by the coaches of the Southeastern Conference. The Tigers made their first Final Four berth since 1986 under Davis’ leadership.

During his senior year, Bob Pettit led LSU to the SEC Championship. With an average of 31.4 points and 17.3 rebounds per game, he was selected All-SEC and All-American.

Pettit held the SEC scoring record with a scoring average of 60 points. Even though Pete Maravich smashed those records, he was just the second player in major college basketball history to average more than 30 points per game. LSU retired his #50 jersey in his honor.

Top Coaches

From 1966 until 1972, Press Maravich was the head basketball coach. At LSU, he had a 76–86 overall record. He guided the club to three winning seasons but failed to win the SEC title or make the NCAA tournament. His squad reached the NIT Final Four in 1969–70.

The accomplishments of Press Maravich’s son, Pete “Pistol Pete” Maravich, whom he coached from 1967 to 1970, are the most well-known from this period. Maravich was voted National Player of the Year in 1970 after averaging 44.2 points per game as a collegiate player.

From 1972 through 1997, Dale Brown was the head basketball coach at LSU for 25 years. He coached the basketball team to two Final Fours, four Elite Eights, five Sweet Sixteens, and thirteen NCAA Tournament berths during his career at LSU. He also guided the Tigers to four SEC regular-season titles and one SEC Tournament title.

Dale Brown signed Baton Rouge high school phenom Lester Earl in 1996–97, after Earl led Glen Oaks High School to three consecutive Louisiana High School Athletic Association state championships (two in Class 4A and one in Class 5A, the highest classification), all of which were played at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

Earl only played 11 games for LSU before being banned and transferring to Kansas shortly after.

Earl said that when he was at LSU, an assistant coach offered him money. The NCAA launched an inquiry right away. According to the report, there was no proof that Brown or his assistants compensated Earl. However, it was discovered that Earl received $5,000 from a previous booster when he was an LSU student. In 1998, the basketball squad was placed on probation.

Will Wade was named the 22nd head coach of the LSU Tigers men’s basketball team on March 20, 2017. Wade led the 2018–19 LSU Tigers to an undisputed Southeastern Conference regular season championship in his second season.

Wade was suspended by the LSU Athletic Department on March 8, 2019, after he declined to meet with university authorities to address his participation in communications with a federally convicted college basketball middleman.

During Wade’s suspension, LSU selected Tony Benford as acting head coach. Following a meeting with university administrators, Wade was reinstated on April 14, 2019.
