Team History

South Carolina’s men’s basketball team competes in the SEC. The Gamecocks won Southern Conference championships in 1927, 1933, 1934, and 1945, and then rose to national prominence from 1967 to 1976 under Hall of Fame coach Frank McGuire, winning the 1970 ACC championship, the 1971 ACC Tournament title, and four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances from 1971 to 1974.

In addition, the squad won the SEC Championship in 1997, NIT championships in 2005 and 2006, and a share of the SEC Eastern division title in 2009. The Gamecocks won the 2017 NCAA East Regional Championship and advanced to the Final Four for the first time in school history. The current head coach is Frank Martin, and the club plays in the Colonial Life Arena, which has a capacity of 18,000 people.

2022 Key Stats

Erik Stevenson has led South Carolina with an 11.4 point per game average thus far this season. Stevenson also has the most assists on the squad, at 2.5 per game. Wildens Leveque, who averages 5.4 rebounds per game, is the team’s leading rebounder.

Championships Won by the Team

South Carolina has never won an NCAA title although they have won the NIT twice in their school history. South Carolina has won their conference title in the regular season six times with the last coming in 1997. They have won one conference title as a member of the SEC. The other five conference titles were split between the ACC, where they won one, and the SoCon where they won four.

South Carolina has also only won the postseason conference tournament twice in their program history with the last coming in 1971. They have been to the NCAA tournament four times in their program history and have made it to the Elite Eight and the Final Four just one time.

Important Team Events

South Carolina’s big rival is Clemson and they have just renewed their rivalry game for this season after not facing each other in 2020. The series between these two teams are tied at 41-41. South Carolina does not have many other rivalries on this level as Clemson. This is one of the biggest games, so is March Madness, that fans and players look toward each season.

Top Players

South Carolina’s John Roche was a three-time All-American and one of the finest players in school history. Roche went to La Salle Academy for high school and earned a B.S. in business administration from the University of South Carolina in 1971. He was voted the ACC basketball Player of the Year twice while at the University of South Carolina, and he finished second in the voting in his other varsity year.

In 1970 and 1971, he was a consensus All-American and Academic All-American basketball player. On the Atlantic Coast Conference’s 50th anniversary squad, he was ranked the 20th best player in the league’s history. After graduation, he was drafted in the first round (14th selection) of the 1971 NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns, as well as the 1971 ABA Draft by the Kentucky Colonels.

Alex English was another outstanding player for South Carolina. From 1972 to 1976, English attended the University of South Carolina and was one of the best players on the floor at that time. Over the course of his four-year career, he started every game and was the school’s first African-American sports star.

He set a school record with 1,972 points and was only the third player in school history to have over 1,000 rebounds and make more than half of his field-goal tries. In 1975 and 1976, English was named to two separate All-America teams. English “acquired interests that he still maintains in art, sculpture, literature, and, notably poetry” in the academic sphere. In 1976, he earned a bachelor’s degree in English.

Top Coaches

Frank McGuire is regarded as one of the best coaches in South Carolina history, having won 283 games over his 16-year tenure, which remains the program record. McGuire became the head coach at South Carolina in 1964. McGuire’s Gamecocks rose to national attention in his sixth season, going undefeated in ACC play in 1970, one of just two occasions an ACC team from South Carolina has won a regular season championship (the other being Clemson in 1990).

The Gamecocks were denied an NCAA entry after losing in double overtime against North Carolina State in the ACC championship game. Only one club from each conference was guaranteed a spot in the 25-team field back then. Ironically, Carolina Coliseum, the Gamecocks’ home arena, hosted the NCAA East Regional the same year.

The Gamecocks’ 25 victories in 1970 were the most in school history until Frank Martin’s 2016 squad won 25 games as well (Martin’s 2017 Gamecocks broke the record with 26 victories). McGuire’s Gamecocks won the ACC tournament in 1971, which remains the only time a South Carolina school has won the championship.

After the Gamecocks became independent in 1972, McGuire led them to three more NCAA Tournament appearances and two National Invitation Tournament appearances before being forced to resign after the 1979-80 season. He has the most wins in school history with 283 victories. Frank McGuire Arena is the name of the playing surface of the Gamecocks’ previous home, Carolina Coliseum.

Before the 1994 season, Eddie Fogler was hired away from Vanderbilt and restored the Gamecocks to relevance within a few years. During the 1996–1998 period, Fogler led South Carolina to a 66–28 record (34–14 SEC), including the school’s first SEC championship in 1997. The 1997 Gamecocks were 15–1 in SEC play and defeated Kentucky twice, but they were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

With eight seasons as the Gamecocks’ head coach, Fogler stepped down after a 123–117 record. He made two NCAA Tournament appearances (1997, 1998) and two NIT appearances throughout his time (1996, 2001). With regular-season conference titles at both Vanderbilt and South Carolina, Fogler retired as one of the most accomplished head coaches in SEC basketball history.

Martin joined to South Carolina after five winning seasons and four NCAA Tournament appearances with Kansas State, including an Elite Eight visit with the Wildcats in 2010. After two seasons of losing records with the Gamecocks, he had a winning season in 2015, then advanced to the NIT in 2016, and then to the NCAA Tournament in 2017, the program’s first appearance in the tournament since 2004.

With a 20-point victory over the Marquette Golden Eagles on March 17, 2017, USC won their first NCAA Tournament game since 1973. The Gamecocks overcame the #2 seeded Duke Blue Devils two nights later to progress to their fourth Sweet 16 appearance.

South Carolina then defeated the #3 seeded Baylor Bears to progress to their first-ever Elite 8, and then beat Florida to reach their first-ever Final Four two days later. Martin has been a mainstay at South Carolina over the last few years and his legacy is continually being cemented to this day.
