Team History

The Tennessee Volunteers play in the SEC and are also known as the “Vols.” The Volunteers play their home games in Thompson–Boling Arena, on a floor known as “the Summitt,” named after former Tennessee Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt, who led the Lady Vols to eight national titles.

Tennessee has regularly been in the top 15 in the country in terms of attendance, averaging 14,817 from 1988 to 2006 and 17,194 from 2007 to 2018 after cutting seating capacity before the 2007 season. Tennessee is currently ranked third in the SEC in all-time victories. Many prominent players have attended Tennessee, including Ernie Grunfeld, Bernard King, Dale Ellis, and Allan Houston, all of whom went on to play in the NBA.

Important Team Events

Tennessee does have some important traditions, but none are as important as the relationship that the team has with their arena and fans. Tennessee’s home games are held in Thompson-Boling Arena, which, until its 2007 makeover, was the largest stadium ever built solely for basketball in the United States, with a seating capacity of 24,678. The arena, which is named after the late B. Ray Thompson and former University of Tennessee President Dr. Edward J. Boling holds women’s volleyball matches, concerts, camps, conferences, and other special events throughout the year.

During the 1987–88 season, Tennessee defeated Marquette 82–56 in front of a crowd of 25,272 at Thompson-Boling Arena. The Volunteers finished third nationally in attendance in their first season, with an average of more than 20,000 fans each game. Men’s and women’s basketball have played an important role in the facility’s long history.

The Volunteers and Lady Volunteers have hosted record collegiate basketball audiences, as well as WNBA and NCAA Tournament basketball games, during the previous two decades. For the previous three seasons, the Volunteers have placed fourth in the country in average home.
