Tulane Team News and Picks

The American Athletic Conference has become one of the best Group of Five leagues in the country, and Tulane has been struggling to keep up. The Green Wave are not expected to be a conference title contender this season, and getting to a bowl game will be a tough task.

Tulane kicks off the season with a road game against the Oklahoma Sooners, and they will also play at Ole Miss in the non-conference. The Green Wave will have to play well in league action if they want to win enough games to advance to a bowl game.

Tulane Green Wave Standings

The Tulane Green Wave have been making waves this season, thanks to their impressive play and strong showing in the current standings. With a potent offense that can strike from anywhere on the field, the Green Wave have been able to keep their opponents on their heels.

The defense has also been solid, limiting their opponents and making it difficult for them to score. Tulane will look to continue their winning ways and make a push for a championship as the season continues.

Tulane Green Wave History

The 2020 season for the Tulane Green Wave did not go as expected, and the team will be looking to turn things around in 2021. Tulane finished 2021 with a record of 6-6 overall but were able to go just 3-5 in conference action.

Tulane did do enough a season ago to be selected to a bowl game, and they took on Nevada in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. The Green Wave suffered a double-digit loss in that matchup, and they have been waiting to get back on the field since that time.

Key Players

Without a doubt, the most important player for Tulane will be sophomore quarterback Michael Pratt. Pratt threw 20 touchdown passes a season ago, and no true freshman in the country was able to match that total.

Tight end Tyrick James was a big part of the offense a season ago and will be a key performer in 2021 as well. Linebacker Dorian Williams is the most important player on the defensive side of the ball, and he should have another big season for Tulane.

New Additions

Joseph Dorceus transferred to Tulane by way of Memphis earlier this year, and he is expected to be in the mix to start on the defensive line. Safety Derrion Rakestraw also transferred to Tulane from Colorado, and he should help shore up some major issues in the secondary.

Key Subtractions

The offense of Tulane didn’t really lose any key performers from a season ago, and that side of the ball is clearly going to be the strength of this team. Losses were felt on the defensive side, and that was already a group that struggled to get stops.

Patrick Johnson and Cameron Sample were terrific defensive linemen for Tulane, but both of these players have since moved on. The rest of the defense returns for Tulane, but it’s a unit that needs to see progress.

Divisional Outlook

Cincinnati is the clear favorite to win the American Athletic Conference this season, but there are also some pretty strong contenders. UCF, Tulsa, and Memphis could also challenge for the conference title, and this is going to be a great league to follow.

Tulane is picked to be right in the middle of the pack this season. The Green Wave should be better than the group at the bottom, but they aren’t as talented as some of the top teams.

Tulane Team Offense

Chip Long is the new offensive coordinator at Tulane, and he has a history of guiding some pretty explosive offenses. Letting Michael Pratt throw the ball all over the field will be the strategy for Tulane, and this team has plenty of talented receivers as well.

Running the football could be a challenge for Tulane this season, especially if running back Tyjae Spears is not able to return to full strength. There is plenty of experience on this offense, and that could allow them to get off to a fast start.

Tulane Team Defense

The Tulane defense was a real problem a season ago, especially when it came to allowing big plays. This conference has some pretty explosive teams in the league, and that is going to make this a difficult task for the defense.

The Green Wave also lost some of its top defensive performers from a season ago, but stopping the run could take some pressure off of the secondary.
