The Tulane Green Wave have gotten off to a bit of a rough start to the 2021-22 campaign as they are off to a 7-9 start to the year. Their rough start has been in part due to the tough non-conference schedule that Tulane plays. Tulane is tied for fourth in the American conference and sits at 4-3 so far in conference play. Tulane still has a shot to finish their year really well but will need to only lose one or two games to end the season.

Tulane has scored 72.3 points per game so far this season and has allowed 72.1 points per game. Tulane has grabbed 31.6 rebounds per game this season and has assisted on 12.5 baskets a game.

Jalen Cook leads the team in scoring per game as he scores 19.6 points a game. Cook also leads the team with 3.4 assists per game. Kevin Cross grabs 6.1 rebounds per game to lead Tulane so far this season. Sion James leads the team in steals per game with 1.6 per contest.

On December 9, 1905, Tulane’s men’s basketball team played their inaugural game. When four players, including star forward “Hot Rod” Williams, were suspected of receiving money and cocaine to tamper with the final point spreads of games they participated in, the program became embroiled in one of the major collegiate sports scandals of the 1980s.

Clyde Eads and Jon Johnson were granted immunity in order to testify against accused ringleader Williams. Despite the fact that he was charged, the court declared a mistrial, and no penalty was imposed. Williams went on to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA for the following nine years. The whole basketball coaching staff, as well as the athletic director, resigned within days of Williams’ arrest.

The basketball program was abolished shortly after by school president Eamon Kelly. He had no intention of allowing it to return, but in 1988, when numerous students persuaded him that they were being punished for something that happened while they were not at Tulane, he yielded.

Perry Clark, the new head coach, restored the team to historic success, including a 13–0 start and a second-round NCAA Tournament appearance in 1991–92. Tulane’s success was equaled by the 1992–93 and 1994–95 teams, but the school hasn’t reached those heights again.

So far this season, Tulane has averaged 72.3 points per game while allowing 72.1 points per game. Tulane has averaged 31.6 rebounds per game and 12.5 assists per game this season. These marks are not very good and shows why Tulane has gotten off to the start that they have.

Tulane Championships Won by the Team

Tulane is not a historically great basketball program and have not won many championships in their program history. They have not had any big runs in the NCAA tournament and have not won a conference postseason tournament. The only championship that Tulane has won in their history has been the conference regular-season title. Tulane has won the regular-season title three times, and their last was in 1992.

Tulane Important Team Events

Tulane does not have any big team events, and they do not have any huge rivalries that they play each year. They kick off the start of the season with a family night of fun during a late-night practice. Other than their opening practice, Tulane does not do much of anything else for their basketball program. They are a very mellow program that does not have a ton of following.

Tulane Top Players

Anthony Reed was one of Tulane’s best players in program history. From 1989 until 1993, he was a member of the Tulane University football team. Reed led the team in scoring, rebounding, minutes, and blocks in his last season at Tulane. Against Jackson State on December 23, 1992, he set a career-best with six blocks. He also led the club in 3-point percentage, with a .324 mark. Tulane retired his jersey number, 55, on senior day. On March 6, 1993, in the game versus South Florida, Reed scored his 1,853rd point, becoming Tulane’s all-time leading scorer.

Reed was named to the All-Metro Conference first team at the end of the season and played in the 1993 NABC all-star game. Reed finished his career with 1,896 points in 118 games which made him the all-time leading scorer at the school at the time. He had 26 double-doubles and 32 20-point games in his career. During his last two seasons, Reed helped Tulane become nationally rated, and he was inducted into the Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015.

Mel Payton, Tulane’s first All-American, became the Green Wave’s second 1,000-point scorer in 1951 and set single-game and season rebounding marks that still stand today.

Two additional All-Americans emerged in the 1960s: Jim Kerwin in 1963 and Johnny Arthurs in 1969. They were the first two players in school history to average 20 points a game throughout their careers, and Phil Hicks would subsequently follow them. Kerwin is Tulane’s only two-time All-American, having won All-America accolades in 1962 and 1963.

John Sutter was the most recent first-team All-America pick, receiving the accolade in 1970. Sutter’s 24.3 scoring average that season is second only to Arthurs’ 25.6 as a senior in school history.

Tulane has had four players become All-Americans while at the school. Paul Thompson, who was the Metro Conference’s Freshman of the Year in 1980 and was named All-Metro four times; John Williams, who was a three-time All-Metro choice and the league’s Player of the Year in 1984; Reed, Tulane’s No. 2 all-time leading scorer, who was named Metro Conference Freshman of the Year in 1990 and was a four-time All-Metro pick; and Clark, who was named National Coach of the Year by three Associated Press poll In 1997, Jerald Honeycutt, a four-time all-conference selection, was named All-America.

Tulane Top Coaches

Cliff Wells, the most successful coach in Tulane history, took over the team in 1945. The Green Wave won 20 games in its first two seasons, going 22-9 in 1946-47. Before losing in the second round of the SEC Tournament to Georgia Tech, the 1947-48 team ended 23-3 and looked poised for a place in the National Invitation Tournament.

Tulane won 20 games the following season, ending 24-4. The Green Wave finished the season ranked ninth in the inaugural year of the Associated Press college basketball rankings. That was also the last time a Green Wave team won 20 games until Tulane won its first 13 games on route to a 22-9 season in 1992. In 1963, Wells would complete his coaching career with 259 victories, more than any other coach in Tulane history.

On March 26, 2019, Ron Hunter was presented as the 25th men’s basketball head coach in Tulane history, and he will manage the team for the third year in 2021-22.

Hunter made the Green Wave’s mark felt nationally and across the American Athletic Conference in his first season as head coach. Tulane defeated Utah on a neutral court, marking the program’s first victory against a Pac-12 Conference opponent since the 1950s. The Green Wave also won league games at home against Cincinnati and SMU, as well as on the road against UCF and Temple.

Hunter came to Tulane following eight seasons as the head coach of Georgia State University’s program, where he had a 171-95 record. Hunter has a career record of 457-332 and has been selected conference coach of the year three times in his 25 years on the bench. Prior to assuming the helm in New Orleans, he had 374 victories at the Division I level, making him the winningest coach in Green Wave basketball history.

Only three coaches in school history have won 100 games: Wells, Claude Simons, and Perry Clark. Between 1920 and 1930, Simons had 101 victories. Clark finished his coaching career at Tulane with 185 victories, enough for second all-time at the institution.
