Important Team Events

Dean Smith won his first championship as head coach in 1982, as that was his 20th year with the program. None other than Michael Jordan lifted the Tar Heels to a 63-62 victory with a last-second jumper. This was MJ’s only championship in college.

UNC defeated the Duke Blue Devils in the 1998 ACC championship game, as both teams are known for being historic rivals. The Tar Heels were the fourth seed, whereas the Blue Devils were the first seed. Antawn Jamison finished the game with 22 points and 18 rebounds, as he was named the MVP of the ACC Tournament. Vince Carter contributed 16 points including some clutch shots down the stretch.

Tyler Hansbrough became the ACC’s all-time leading scorer back in 2009, as he sank both of his free throws in the opening game of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. He remains the all-time leading scorer in the ACC to this day with 2,872 points.

Michael Jordan had arguably the greatest career of all time as an NBA basketball player, but before he went on to the league, he spent three years at Chapel Hill. He was the National College Player of the Year in 1984 as well as the ACC Player of the Year. He also hit the game-winning shot for UNC in the 1982 championship game over Georgetown. Jordan went on to play 15 seasons in the NBA, with 13 being spent with the Chicago Bulls, two with the Washington Wizards. Jordan is a five-time MVP, six-time champion, 10-time scoring champ, and a former Defensive Player of the Year, among other awards.

Vince Carter is the greatest dunker the game of basketball has ever seen, as he electrified Chapel Hill for three years during his time there. Carter was a First Team All-ACC and Third Team All-ACC selection during his time there. VC spent an NBA record 22 seasons in the league, as he had stints with the Toronto Raptors, New Jersey Nets, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, and Atlanta Hawks. Carter was an eight-time All-Star, two-time All NBA selection, an NBA Teammate of the Year Award winner in 2016, and NBA Sportsmanship Award winner in 2020.

James Worthy was a First Team and Second Team All-ACC selection during his three years at UNC. He went on to have a 12-year NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers, winning three championships with an NBA Finals MVP. He also was a two-time All-NBA selection.

Antawn Jamison was the National College Player of the Year and ACC Player of the Year in 1998. He went on to play 16 seasons in the NBA, which included stints with the Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Los Angeles Clippers. He was a two-time All-Star and Sixth Man of the Year winner.

Top Coaches

Dean Smith is the most celebrated coach in program history, as he has the most wins by far as a UNC coach with an 879-254 record to his name. Smith coached many of the legendary players the program has ever seen, including Michael Jordan and Vince Carter. He helped promote desegregation by recruiting the first African American scholarship basketball player Charlie Scott. It may have taken him 20 years to win his first championship, but it still doesn’t erase what he accomplished at Chapel Hill.

Roy Williams is the second-winningest coach in program history, as he has a 485-163 all-time record. He has the most championships as a coach in UNC history as well, as he was the coach during their 2005, 2009, and 2017 runs. Williams has been credited for helping the Tar Heels get back to relevance following Smith’s tenure and for promoting a family-like culture.
