Maryland Terrapins Football Team

The Maryland Terrapins may not have the history of winning as some of the other programs in the nation, but they have a rich history nonetheless. The program officially started its first season in 1892 while known as the Maryland Agricultural College.

Since their inception, the Terrapins are 654-608-43. They have competed in 26 bowl games in their history, as well as they are a combined 11-13-2 and have won a National Championship in their existence.

This football program has a good amount of history with some historic players that some fans may not be familiar with outside of the program or did not realize went to the University of Maryland. The program seems to be on the rise currently and could find a few more accolades in the coming years if they continue to build it correctly.

Recent Maryland Terrapins History

Recent history has been tough on the Terrapins as they are trying to find a person to solidify the program. Since 2010, there have been five different coaches for the program and one winning season. In 2018, Matt Canada was the head coach for Maryland, and he finished with a 5-7 (3-6) record.

In 2019, the Terrapins were as ranked as high as 21st in the nation and looked like they were on the cusp of greatness but finished the season a miserable 3-9 (1-8) in Mike Locksley’s first season as head coach.

2020 was a difficult season as there was a limited schedule due to the Coronavirus pandemic that almost canceled the season entirely. Instead, we were able to see the Maryland Terrapins play five games, all against fellow Big Ten Conference members, and they went 2-3.

As of this writing, they are doing well with a 4-2 record but are just 1-2 in conference play.

Key Players in History

There are not many notable names that the football world will know as they have not had great post-college careers in the NFL but are definitely impactful in the history of Maryland Terrapins football.

We will start with arguably the most-known player on this list is tight end Vernon Davis. He played three college seasons from 2003-2005 and finished with 83 receptions for 871 yards (17.1 yards per catch) with six touchdowns.

Another impactful player some older fans may remember is defensive end Randy White. He actually entered the program as a running back, but head coach Jerry Claiborne transitioned White to defensive end, and it really helped his career.

He won the Outland Trophy, the Lombardi Award, and was named the ACC Player of the Year in his senior year in 1974. He also finished top-10 in the Heisman voting.

Despite being on the losing end of the Liberty Bowl that season, he was named the game’s MVP and eventually elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994.

Key Championships

The Terrapins have not had much success throughout the franchise history in terms of winning championships at any level. However, that does not mean that their trophy room is bare.

They have won the Southern Conference Championship in 1937 and were co-champions in 1951. They also were co-champions in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1951, 1953, and 1955. They won the ACC Championship outright in the years 1974, 1975, 1976, 1983, 1984, 1985, and 2001.

The biggest win for the program in their entire history happened in the 1953 season as they were crowned the National Champions by the Associated Press. They finished the 1953 season under head coach Jim Tatum with a 10-1 record as they were perfect during the regular season but lost in the Orange Bowl to make their final record 10-1.

It’s been a couple of decades now, but it looks like Maryland can be competitive in the ACC and potentially get a couple more championships in the not-so-distant future.

Conference Outlook

The Big Ten Conference could have some major shifting in the next few seasons as they announced a major alliance with the Atlantic Coast Conference and Pac-12 conferences to attempt to bolster schedules and create more intriguing matchups.

That could mean they will be traveling out west more and take on programs like UCLA or travel south to take on Clemson.

Looking at the Big Ten Conference itself, though, is a different story in terms of college football. They are not the class of the conference as in their division; they are matched with Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, and Penn State. When looking at the opposite division, they have Iowa, Minnesota, Purdue, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Nebraska.

This shows that the conference is healthy and has many competitive football programs scattered through it and not many teams that are pushovers that make the conference look inferior.

Coaching History

When you have over 125 years in the history of your program, there are going to be a lot of names that pop up, so we will touch on some of the more impactful ones here.

Will Skinner was the first head coach back in 1892, and the team went 0-3 as an independent. The earliest successful head coach was Curley Byrd, who coached the Terrapins from 1911 through 1934 with pretty good success.

The first coach to build a ranked program in the country was Jim Tatum, who had the Terrapins finish 14th and climbed all the way to the top-ranked team in the nation to finish the 1953 regular season.

Jerry Claiborne brought Maryland to their first bowl games in the 1970s, and Ralph Friedgen rebuilt the program to be successful throughout the 2000s. They are now headed by their third-year head coach Mike Locksley and seem to be going in the correct direction.

Has a Terrapin ever won the Heisman Award?

As of this writing, no player has ever won the Heisman Award in Maryland. However, quarterback Jack Scarbath was the closest as in 1952; he was the runner-up to the award to Billy Vessels.

Are the Terrapins good this season?

It seems like they are playing well this season despite being fifth in the Big Ten-East as they are being led by Taulia Tagovailoa under center and Tayon Fleet-Davis in the backfield. They are currently 4-2 on the season and are trying to become a better program against Big Ten foes.

Who are the College Football Hall of Fame players for Maryland?

The Maryland Terrapins have six players that are in the College Football Hall of Fame as of this writing, and two of them have also be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Guard Bob Ward was inducted in 1980, quarterback Jack Scarbath was elected in 1983, tackle Dick Modzelewski was elected in 1993, defensive tackle Randy White was elected in 1994, center Bob Pellegrini was selected in 1996, and tackle Stan Jones was elected in 2000.

Well, it really depends on who you ask because there is a rivalry with the Penn State Nittany Lions, but Penn State is 39-3-1 against Maryland. However, it seems like there is no real rivalry for the Terrapins, but it will be fun trying to find one for them in the future.
