Team History

Purdue basketball goes back to 1896 when they played the Lafayette YMCA for the first time. In his lone season as head coach, C.I. Freeman guided them to an unbeaten 8–0 record in 1902–03. After the season, the university acknowledged the sport’s appeal and added it to the Purdue University Athletic Association.

Three years later, the Boilermakers joined the Big Ten Conference, and Ralph Jones led them to their first conference title in 1911. Ward “Piggy” Lambert, a former Wabash College basketball player, was named head coach of the Boilermakers in 1917. Purdue’s basketball team went on to have one of the most dominant eras in the league and nationally.

Purdue became a forerunner in the creation of the fast-paced game that it is now under Lambert’s leadership. Lambert coached 16 All-Americans and 31 First Team All-Big Ten honors in 28 seasons, including John Wooden, the 1932 National Player of the Year. Wooden was the first player in collegiate history to be selected a three-time Consensus All-American.

Championships Won by the Team

Purdue has never won an NCAA title although they have had quite a bit of success over the years. They have made the Final Four twice in their program history and the last appearance came in 1980. Purdue was named the Premo-Porretta and Helms champions prior to the NCAA tournament coming about in 1932. Purdue was the NCAA title runner-up in 1969.

Purdue has won the conference tournament once in their program history which was in 2009. They have won their conference regular-season title in 24 different seasons which is the most in Big Ten history.

Important Team Events

One of the biggest rivalries in college basketball is the Purdue vs Indiana rivalry. On March 2, 1901, Indiana and Purdue faced off in men’s basketball for the first time. Since then, the two teams have met at least once a year, and until 2001, they met twice a year. Purdue has a 124-89 advantage in the all-time series.

Purdue has won the Big 10 regular-season championship 24 times, while Indiana has won 22 times. Since the Big Ten’s inception in the 1904–05 season, the schools have won or shared over 39 percent of the conference titles. Both are among the most successful schools in Division I basketball; Indiana is ranked 10th, and Purdue is 14th, as of the completion of the 2018-2019 season.

Top Players

Rick Mount was the captain of Purdue’s first-ever NCAA Tournament squad, which advanced to the championship game before losing to Lew Alcindor and UCLA. He was one of the finest pure shooters to ever grace a basketball floor.

With 2,323 points in three seasons and an average of 32.3 points per night—the latter ranking sixth in Division I history—the Rocket established a grip on Purdue’s school records even without the comfort of a three-point line.

Mount, who was the ABA’s #1 overall draft selection in 1970 for the Pacers, appeared in three ABA Finals with three different teams and won a championship with Indiana in 1972. His individual performance, on the other hand, never matched what he had done as a college player, as he averaged just 14.9 points per game in his finest complete season and failed to make a single All-Star appearance in a five-year career cut short by injuries.

Glenn Robinson is the first Big Ten player to average 30 points per game for a complete season in the previous 40 years. Purdue’s Big Dog acquired his moniker after guiding the Boilermakers to the 1994 Elite Eight and became the only Boilermaker to win both the Wooden and Naismith Awards.

Robinson went on to have the most successful NBA career of any Purdue alum, averaging more than 20 points per game in eight of his eleven seasons in the league. The two-time All-Star had his greatest years with the Bucks, who chose him first overall and received eight fantastic years in return.

Top Coaches

On April 11, 1980, Gene Keady was named head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers men’s basketball team. With 493 victories, Keady became the winningest coach in school history and the second-winningest coach in the Big Ten Conference, trailing only former rival Bob Knight. He also won the Big Ten Coach of the Year award a record seven times. From 1984 through 1996, he led the Boilermakers to six Big Ten titles, including three straight outright wins. For the 2004–2005 season, Keady hired Matt Painter as his associate head coach. He was chosen to take over the post as head coach in 2005.

After leading Purdue to 18 NCAA Tournament berths with the 2004–2005 season, Keady stepped down as head coach. He led the Boilermakers to two Sweet Sixteen visits and two Elite Eight appearances. He has a 20–19 postseason record in the NCAA tournament. With a 12–5 record and runner-up and third-place finishes, he guided Purdue to five NIT berths.

In honor of him, the basketball floor at Mackey Arena was renamed “Keady Court.” Keady was named the 2007 John R. Wooden “Legends of Coaching” Award winner in October 2006. Since the award’s inception in 1999, Keady is the eighth person to receive it. Gene was cited as stating when coaching at Purdue, “Recruiting is similar to shaving in that if you skip a day, you’ll look like a bum.”

Another of Purdue’s finest coaches is the current head coach. Painter’s motion offense has routinely ranked among the top five in the country in recent years. Painter’s teams are also noted for their “tough, stingy” defense and their “stout, stingy” offense “This is a massive offensive. Painter’s teams have routinely ranked in the top 15 nationally in offensive and defensive efficiency since taking over at Purdue.

Purdue teams have reached the NCAA Tournament twelve times under Painter’s leadership, including four Sweet Sixteen visits and one Elite Eight appearance. Painter also made the NCAA Tournament in his one season as a head coach at Southern Illinois, giving him a total of thirteen appearances in the tournament in his seventeen years of coaching. During his time at Purdue, Painter coached a total of nine NBA players, two of whom were taken in the first round of the NBA Draft.
