Wisconsin Badgers Recent History

The Badgers have been doing well as of late as they have been ranked to begin the season in each of the last five years. They’ve also appeared in a bowl game every season since 2002. They went 8-5 (5-4) in 2018, 10-4 (7-2) in 2019, 4-3 (3-3) in an abbreviated 2020 season, and are currently 2-3 (1-2) in 2021 as of this writing.

Key Players in History

When talking about Wisconsin football history, it’s difficult to not start with running back Ron Dayne. He was a member of the program from 1996-1999. At the time of his departure, Dayne held the NCAA all-time rushing leader with 6,397 total rushing yards in just 43 games. His worst season was in 1998 where he ran just 1,325 yards for the year.

Another running back was Alan Ameche, as he played for the Badgers in 1953 and 1954. His only listed stats are from the 1954 season, where he finished with 146 rushes for 641 yards (4.4 yards per attempt) without finding the end zone. He did play both sides of the football, though.

Key Championships

Not many programs can reap the same amount of National Championships, but the Wisconsin Badgers have been the champions of College Football three times (1906, 1928, and 1942). They have been successful at competing in their conferences as they won the conference championship 14 times (1896, 1897, 1901, 1906, 1912, 1952, 1959, 1962, 1993, 1998, 1999, 2010, 2011, and 2012).

Conference Outlook

The future for the Big Ten Conference is incredibly bright as prior to the launch of the season, they announced an alliance with both the Big 12 Conference and the Pac-12 Conference. The Big Ten Conference is one of the most loaded in the entire sport currently as the Iowa Hawkeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Penn State Nittany Lions are all ranked inside of the top-10 programs this season as of this writing.

The conversation surrounding the alliance is one that will only strengthen these programs inside of it as they will play each other and make incredible matchups that the Badgers have not had the opportunity to be a part of for years.

Coaching History

There have been a number of head coaches since the program’s inception back in 1889, and they, according to Sports Reference. They kicked off with Frank Crawford but immediately switched coaches for a few seasons until Phil King directed them to just six total losses in six seasons. Ivy Williamson brought them to their first Bowl game as they competed in the Rose Bowl in 1952.

Barry Alvarez was their most consistent head coach as he coached the Badgers from 1993-2005. They are currently under the direction of head coach Paul Chryst, who has been a part of the program since 2013 and has guided the Wisconsin Badgers to be one of the programs you don’t want on your schedule for almost a decade.
