Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Owls

The Owls come into 2021 after a very solid 2020 campaign. FAU finished the regular season with a 5-3 record, which qualified them for a bowl game. The Owls were invited to the Montgomery Bowl to take on the Memphis Tigers. Unfortunately, the Owls were unsuccessful and lost.

Coming into 2021, the team had to focus on finding more offense. They were able to get some key guys from the transfer portal that should become instant impact players. The defense should be rock solid again, returning 11 starters from last season.

Florida Atlantic Owls standings

The Florida Atlantic Owls have had a solid start to their season, with a current record of 6-4. With a balanced mix of offense and defense, the Owls have been able to secure their position in the NCAAF standings. Their stats have been improving game after game, and they are a force to be reckoned with on the field.

2020 Summary

2020 got off to a tough start for the Owls. The team’s first four games, all of which would have been non-conference games, were all either canceled or postponed. The team did not get to play their first game until October 3rd.

The season began with a conference matchup against Charlotte. FAU was able to get their first win by a score of 21-17. The Owls followed this game up with one of the top teams in the division, Marshall University. FAU kept it close but ultimately lost 9-20.

The Owls seemed to find their footing after the loss to Marshall, starting a four-game winning streak. The first opponent was UTSA, who the Owls defeated 24-3. The team then took on another top team in the division in Western Kentucky. FAU went on to defeat them 10-6.

The next two wins were two of the biggest wins, by score, in the season. The Owls were able to defeat Florida International by a score of 38-19. Following that big win, FAU defeated UMASS by a score of 24-2.

After back-to-back cancellations, the Owls took on Georgia Southern. FAU was on the losing end of this contest by a score of 3-10. The Owls lost their final regular-season game to Southern Miss 31-45. This loss brought their overall record to 5-3.

With a 5-3 record, the Owls were bowl eligible and selected to the Montgomery Bowl to take on Memphis Tigers. FAU was not able to get this victory and lost 10-25.

FAU Key Players

The Owls’ number one running back, James Charles Sr., returns for the 2021 season. While Charles did not have any 100+ yard games in 2020, he led the team with 429 yards and added four touchdowns. Charles will be a big part of the 2021 season if the Owls are going to find a way to compete for a conference championship.

Defensive end Jaylen Joyner will start his third season with FAU. Joyner recorded 40 tackles, six sacks, and 7.5 tackles for a loss in 2020. While Joyner is a part of one of the best defensive lines in the conference, he is expected to be one of the best pass rushers in the country.

FAU Key Additions and Subtractions

An addition to the coaching staff could lead to positive results for FAU in 2021. Michael Johnson will become the co-offensive coordinator as well as the quarterbacks’ coach. Johnson coached in Oregon with the FAU head coach. Johnson has also spent some time coaching in the NFL, where he was also a quarterbacks’ coach.

The Owls will have to find a way to make up for the loss of Leighton McCarthy on the defensive side of the ball. After not being selected in the 2021 draft, McCarthy signed a free-agent contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. McCarthy was a huge factor in all four years with FAU, from being on the All-Freshman team in 2017 to being named to the second team All-Conference in his final season.

Divisional Outlook

The Owls have the potential to have a big 2021 season in their division. Getting almost all of their defensive talent back after a 2020 season where they were nearly dominant all year will help them to focus on other weaknesses.

The biggest thing for the Owls will be their offense. In seven of the team’s nine games last season, the Owls were only able to score 24 points or less. If the Owls can find a way to develop more scoring drives and get into the endzone, there is no doubt the Owls could be at the top of their division.

FAU Offense

N’Kosi Perry, remember this name for the Owls. The transfer quarterback from the University of Miami looks to change the way the offense runs at FAU. Perry spent time at the starting role in his four years at Miami. He threw for over 2,400 yards in 24 games played, with 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Another player that will add to the offensive weapons for FAU is the Penn State transfer, John Dunmore. A four-star recruit in high school, Dunmore only played a single game while with Penn State. Dunmore had offers from major schools, Miami, Florida, Michigan, and Ohio State, before committing to Penn State. Dunmore will transfer in with four years of eligibility.

FAU Defense

This defense has all the weapons to be just as successful in 2021 as they were in 2020. The team was second in the conference in points allowed per game, 17,4, and fourth in yards per play allowed, 5.1. If the Owls can just find a way to maintain this defensive prowess, they will be atop the standings in 2021.
