Louisiana Tech Bulldogs

The Bulldogs finished 2020 with a 5-4 regular-season record and were invited to the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. They were defeated by Georgia Southern, but this allowed them to keep their streak of bowl games going, which started in 2014. The defense is the bright spot with this program, and they will return 10 starters from last season.

The Bulldogs have a strong defense and an impressive offensive line, and their stats reflect their hard work and determination on the field. With a promising future ahead, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs are definitely a team to keep an eye on in the NCAAF standings.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Betting Trends

2020 Summary

The Bulldogs had their first game of 2020 canceled, a non-conference game with Baylor. Following the cancellation, the Bulldogs jumped right into conference play. Their first opponent was Southern Miss. Louisiana Tech was able to pull out a nail-biter and win 31-30.

The following week the team had a non-conference game against Houston Baptist, a D-II school. The Bulldogs were able to win this game pretty easily by a score of 66-38. The team then played a much tougher opponent in BYU. The result was not pretty, as Louisiana Tech lost 45-14.

Conference play picked up mightily after BYU with a game against UTEP. The Bulldogs were victorious 21-17, taking their record to 3-1. After UTEP, the Bulldogs faced the two powerhouses in the conference in Marshall and UTSA.

The Bulldogs were defeated by Marshall by a score of 35-17. They then suffered a heartbreaking loss to UTSA by a score of 27-26. The following week they took on a solid UAB squad. Louisiana Tech was able to pull out a double-overtime thriller by a score of 37-34.

Unfortunately for Louisiana Tech, they ran into some COVID issues in November of last season. The team did not play a single game in the month, with four cancellations.

The Bulldogs got back on the field for their last conference game of the season against North Texas on December 3rd. The Bulldogs came away with the win by a score of 42-31. They then played their final regular-season game against TCU and were defeated 52-10.|

The Bulldogs were invited to the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl with a 5-4 record to take on Georgia Southern. The Bulldogs were obliterated in this one by a score of 38-3.

Louisiana Tech Key Players

Austin Kendall will start at quarterback for the Bulldogs this season. A transfer from West Virginia, Kendall comes in with big-game experience. In 2019, Kendall started 11 games and threw for 1.989 yards and 12 touchdowns. Kendall also spent time at Oklahoma, where he was the backup to the number one NFL draft pick Baker Mayfield.

Senior linebacker Trey Baldwin is looking to have another big year for the Bulldogs. After a second-team All-Conference bid in 2020, Baldwin is hungry to make the jump to the first team. He recorded 85 total tackles with a team’s best 53 solo tackles. Baldwin will lead a defense that is returning 10 total starters.

Louisiana Tech Key Additions and Subtractions

Keyon Henry-Brooks is a transfer addition from Vanderbilt University. In two seasons with the Commodores, Henry-Brooks ran for 746 yards and three touchdowns. He had five starts in 2020, where he rushed for 494 yards and two touchdowns. He had a team-high 82.3 rushing yards per game.

Offensive line coach Robert McFarland has left the Louisiana Tech program after five years. He was the second longest-tenured coach behind their offensive coordinator. His greatest accomplishment was in four of the five seasons, and his offensive line was able to produce 1,000-yard rushers.

Divisional Outlook

After finishing third in the eastern division last season, Louisiana Tech will look to compete for the top spot in 2021. Last season they were able to hand UAB their only conference loss and were extremely competitive against UTSA, losing by just a single point.

The defense has the potential to be one of the best in the conference. If the team is going to be successful, they are going to need their offense to be more productive. One positive is they will get to play the big game against UTSA at home this season.

Louisiana Tech Offense

The addition of Austin Kendall will give this offense a much different look in 2021. A big-armed quarterback who comes from a program that was pass first and Kendall was successful. The wide receiving core of Smoke Harris, Griffin Herbert, and Isaiah Graham should see immediate production with Kendall under center.

The Bulldogs have to find a running game. Not only will they have Keyon Henry-Brooks, but they also have a transfer from Appalachian State, Marcus Williams Sr. In four years, he ran for over 2,200 yards and was able to score 14 touchdowns. The Bulldogs are hoping this backfield duo can help to improve the run game.

Louisiana Tech Defense

While the 2020 defense was not the greatest last season, giving up an average of 35 points per game, returning 10 starters will help. The team struggled to get pressure on quarterbacks and allowed 427 yards per game. If the defense can figure out how to get these numbers trending down, they will find themselves competing for a top conference spot.

Names to look out for in 2021 on the defense would be BeeJay Williamson, Trey Baldwin, and Ezekiel Barnett. Williamson will enter his sophomore season and is one of the best playmakers for this defense. In 2020 he recorded 56 tackles and had three interceptions.
