North Texas Mean Green

The North Texas football team will look to build off of an okay 2020 season. They finished 4-6 overall, with a 3-4 conference record. One thing for certain with the Mean Green, their offense gets the job done. With arguably the best offense in the conference, North Texas will look to clean up the defensive play with a new defensive coordinator and climb the standings in 2021.

North Texas Mean Green Standings

The North Texas Mean Green football team has been making a name for themselves with their outstanding stats and impressive standings in the NCAAF. With a fast-paced offense and a tough defense, the Mean Green have consistently been a top-ranked team in their conference. Their solid performance on the field has earned them a loyal following of fans who are always excited to see them in action. With their focus on success, the Mean Green are poised for another great season.

North Texas Mean Green Betting Trends

2020 Summary

North Texas started their season with a big win against Houston Baptist University by a score of 57-31. This momentum did not last very long as they matched up with SMU two weeks later. North Texas was defeated 65-35. This was the first game where the defense really began to have its weaknesses exposed.

Their final non-conference game against the University of Houston was canceled due to COVID issues, so they got right into conference play. Their first opponent was Southern Miss, which they lost 41-31. They took another conference loss to Charlotte right after by a score of 49-21.

North Texas got their first conference win against Middle Tennessee by a score of 52-35. The Mean Green was supposed to play the talented UAB after, but that game was also canceled because of COVID. North Texas then took down a solid Rice team 27-17.

Following back-to-back wins, the team played the powerhouse UTSA. This game was a blowout from start to finish, and North Texas was defeated 49-17. They then took a loss to Louisiana Tech 42-31.

The team finished their regular season with a big win against UTEP 45-43. With this win, North Texas became bowl eligible. They were invited to the Myrtle Beach Bowl, where they took on Appalachian State. North Texas was defeated 56-28.

North Texas Key Players

Deonte Simpson, a wide receiver, has that big play mentality for North Texas. In 2020 he only had 25 receptions but had 517 yards. He was able to score four touchdowns as well. On average, every reception he made was for over 20 yards. Jaelon Darden was the top receiver last year and is now in the NFL, so look for Simpson’s role to drastically increase in 2021.

Dion Novil, a senior defensive lineman, will be a key return on the defensive side of the ball for North Texas. In 2020 he was responsible for 20 solo tackles, 2.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. While the defense had several issues in 2020, returning veteran leadership is always great for a team.

North Texas Key Additions and Subtractions

One of the best additions to the football team is in the defensive coordinator role. Phil Bennett has been named as North Texas’ new defensive coordinator for 2021. With 40 years of coaching experience, Bennett comes in looking to make immediate improvements. He has coached at schools like Arizona State, Baylor and was the head coach at SMU.

Quarterback Jason Bean entered the transfer portal after the 2020 season. Bean split time with Austin Aune in 2020 and was responsible for 1131 yards passing, 14 passing touchdowns, 346 yards rushing, and five rushing touchdowns.

Divisional Outlook

The whole outlook for North Texas is going to depend on what Coach Bennett and the defense can do. In 2020 the defense gave up over 42 points per game. They were giving up almost seven yards per play last season.

In the west division, they will have to find a way to get through UTSA, Louisiana Tech, and UAB. All three of these teams are going to be better than North Texas on paper. The offense will also need to be better in these big games. Against UTSA in 2020, they were only able to put up 17 points. They were better against Louisiana Tech, scoring 31 points, but that was not good enough.

North Texas Offense

The offense in 2020 was phenomenal. They led the entire Conference USA in scoring, yards per play, and most plays over 40 yards. Scoring 34.4 points per game should make for a winning program. Averaging 6.6 yards per play should make for a winning program. Unfortunately, the defense gave up more, and they struggled to win.

The offense also has an interesting situation at the quarterback position. On one hand, they will have Austin Aune returning for 2021. He threw for 1,650 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. He split time with Bean but was more than effective under center.

The quarterback competing for the job will be Jace Ruder. A transfer from North Carolina, Ruder has struggled with injury issues throughout his career. Ruder has dealt with a broken collarbone as well as a broken leg. The four-star recruit can be the guy for North Texas, and the question is going to be if he can learn the playbook in time.

North Texas Defense

It is no secret, and the defense has to find a way to be better. We know there is an issue when your team can not win when they are averaging over 34 points per game. The defense added a lot of depth through the transfer portal, as well as went out and got a proven defensive coordinator.

A potential big deal transfer for North Texas is cornerback Logan Wilson. While he has yet to play a college snap due to COVID issues and redshirting his freshman year, we know Wilson is very fast and a playmaker. In his senior year at Bishop Dunne in Texas, he recorded over 30 tackles and was responsible for five interceptions.
