Colorado State Team News and History

The Colorado State football program predates the name Colorado State. The school first began playing football in 1893 in the Colorado Football Association when the college was still known as Colorado Agricultural University.

The early years were lean. Between 1893 and 1911, the team only won more than one game in a season twice. With a move to the Rocky Mountain, Athletic Conference came to a change in fortunes. Harry Hughes took over as the head coach of the then-named Aggies, and between 1915 and 1934, the Aggies won eight RMAC titles, and twice they finished with unbeaten records.

Recent History

Since the Mountain West Conference was created in 1999 and became the home of CSU football, the team has had a nice run of success. It was the last half of the Sonny Lubick era, and he alone brought three conference titles to Ft. Collins. Lubick also won the conference three times when CSU was in the WAC.

The Rams have continued to be successful beyond the Lubick days, and between 2013 and 2017, they made five consecutive bowl appearances – tied for the longest streak in school history.

The Rams also had a 10-win season in 2014 – the fifth time in school history that they finished with double-digit wins. The school record for wins in a season is 11, set in 1997.

Key Players in History

Because of his enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1970, the conversation of best players in Colorado State history begins with Jack Christiansen. He lettered in football, track, and baseball, was a conference champion in the quarter-mile race, and all-conference in football twice.

In the NFL, he won three championships as a defensive back for Detroit, was a six-time First-Team All-Pro, and is a member of the NFL’s 100th Anniversary All-Time Team.

If Christiansen isn’t the best Ram of all-time, then it’s linebacker Joey Porter. He didn’t play on defense until his junior year, and that’s when he began to thrive. He finished his college career with 22 sacks, and then as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers; he recorded 98 more. He is not yet a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but the four-time Pro Bowler has a strong case for enshrinement.

Key Championships

Colorado State has never played for a National Championship, but 15 times they have won their conference title.

  • Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference: Eight conference championships.
  • Skyline Conference: One conference championship.
  • Western Athletic Conference: Three conference championships.
  • Mountain West Conference: Three conference championships.

The Rams have played in 17 bowl games and won a total of six bowl game trophies.

They beat Oregon in the Freedom Bowl (1990), Missouri in the Holiday Bowl (1997), Louisville in the Liberty Bowl (2000), North Texas in the New Orleans Bowl (2001), Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl (2008), and Washington State in the New Mexico Bowl (2013.

Conference Outlook

Even though the Rams haven’t won the Mountain West Conference since 2002, they continue to be one of the most competitive teams in its history. Twelve times they’ve qualified for bowl bids as a member of the MWC, and three times they’ve won as many as ten games.

It’s a challenging conference, and the Rams are in the very competitive Mountain division, which contains Wyoming, Boise State, and Air Force. Since the conference split into two divisions in 2013, the Mountain division has been dominated by Boise State. The Broncos have appeared in the championship game five times.

Boise State also has the most championship game titles, having won the Mountain West in 2014, 2017, and 2019.

Along with facing those challenging teams, Colorado State has an upcoming non-conference schedule that features Michigan, Washington State, Texas, and Arizona.

Coaching History

Harry Hughes is the winningest coach in Colorado State history with 125 wins and eight conference championships. He is most credited with putting the Rams on the map in the early days and creating an actual football power in Ft. Collins.

The most popular coach in Colorado State history is Sonny Lubick. He won six conference titles, took the Rams to nine bowl games, and is the namesake for the field the Rams play on. It’s Canvas Stadium, but officially it’s called Sonny Lubick Field at Canvas Stadium.

Before Canvas Stadium, the Rams played at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium – which combined the names of both Colorado State head coaching legends.

In 2017 a new on-campus stadium named Sonny Lubick Field at Canvas Stadium opened. It seats 41,000.

How many conference championships has Colorado State won?

Colorado State has played in five different conferences through the years and has won 15 conference championships.

Who is the most impactful Colorado State football alum?

Several great football players have come through Colorado State, but the biggest barriers are being broken by Kelsey Martinez, the first female strength coach in the NFL and the first female assistant coach of any kind with the Raiders.

What is the Colorado State football mascot?

It wasn’t until 1959 that the University began to recognize the nickname Rams officially. Before that, the team was known as the Aggies, even though students informally began using the Rams nickname as early as 1945.

In the late 1950s, the school changed its name from Colorado Agriculture and Mechanic Arts to Colorado State, so a nickname change was also needed. About the bighorn sheep of Colorado, the Rams was a natural choice, and the name of the Ram became CAM the Ram, using the initials of Colorado A&M.
