Nevada Wolf Pack News and History

The Nevada Wolf Pack football program represents the University of Nevada Reno in the NCAAF. They’re commonly referred to as just “Nevada” in athletics and are part of the Mountain West Conference. They were established in 1896 but went under the name Sagebrushers when they first joined. Nevada is a part of the FBS (Football Subdivision) and is a Division I school.

Nevada has had two stadiums in its time; the current Mackay Stadium was built in 1966. The original stadium was built in 1909. Nevada has had three individuals selected to the College Football Hall of Fame. This is mainly due to the little attention they receive due to location. Still, there are a lot of individuals that have had success who are Nevada alumni.

One of these individuals is Chris Ault, a former coach for the Nevada Wolf Pack. They’re also responsible for players such as Colin Kaepernick and Brock Marion. Only a single Nevada Wolf Pack alumni have been entered into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Marion Motley. Last year, the Nevada Wolfpack stated that Colin Kaepernick would be inducted into their Hall of Fame.

The Nevada Wolf Pack isn’t an esteemed football program like some other schools. In fact, from 2000-2003, they compiled a record of 16-31. This has caused the program to go through multiple changes at the head coaching position. The inconsistencies have led the team to plenty of losing records but have gotten better in recent years.

From 2004 to 2012, Chris Ault took over the team again. Ault was originally hired in 1976 but had much to do with Nevada’s football team. He was the Athletic Director and, after firing Chris Tormey, hired himself to be the head coach. Ault led the Wolf Pack to the most success the program has seen. In 2010, the Wolf Pack secured a 13-1 record, the best they had in years.

From 2017 until now, the head coach is Jay Norvell, who has the team in great shape. For the 2021 season, the Wolf Pack is currently 5-1, first in the Mountain West. Under Norvell, the Wolf Pack sees similar success as they did under Ault.

Key Players in Nevada Wolf Pack History

The Nevada Wolf pack has had 40 All-Americans, some of which might be familiar to you. Others are from early in the team’s history; one of these players is Marion Motley. Motley played three seasons with the Wolf Pack from 1940-1942. In those years, Motley earned the nickname “the Jackie Robinson of Football.” Motley was one of four players to break professional football’s color barrier.

Frank Hawkins, another retired number for the Wolf Pack, played from 1977-1980. As a running back, he was a three-time All-American. He led the Division I-AA in rushing twice and rushed for over 5,300 yards in his college football career. He was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 1981 and played seven seasons with them. In 1984, Hawkins won a Super Bowl with the Raiders.

Perhaps the most notable player of recent years for the Nevada Wolfpack is Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick was one of the only players in Wolf Pack history to get close to winning a Heisman Trophy. In 2010, Kaepernick ended up 8th in Heisman voting. In his four-year career at Nevada, Colin Kaepernick passed for over 10,000 yards.

Key Nevada Wolf Pack Championships

Through their time as a college football team, the Nevada Wolf Pack has won 14 conference championships. You’ll have to remember, though, that Nevada has been a part of four different conferences. The first time they won a conference championship was in 1932 as a member of the Far Western Conference.

They wound up winning three conference championships during their time in the Far Western Conference. In 1932, 1933, and 1939, the Wolf Pack won the Far Western Conference. From 1939 until 1983, the Wolf Pack didn’t win a single conference championship. When they won their fourth conference championship in 1983, they were a part of the Big Sky Conference.

As a member of the Big Sky Conference, the Nevada Wolf Pack won four championships. In their final year as a member of the Big Sky in 1991, when they won a conference championship. The next year the Wolf Pack moved into the Big West and won another conference championship. They’ve won seven conference championships since 1992.

Conference Outlook

The 2021 season is shaping up rather well for the Wolf Pack. They’re currently tied for the number one spot in the Mountain West. However, the Wolf Pack has stiff competition this year, including San Diego State. If the Wolf Pack want to pass up San Diego State, they’ll need to win the rivalry game at the end of the season.

The Mountain West is an incredibly tough conference to separate yourself in. The coaching staff and players at Nevada have done a great job getting to the top. Their local rival, the University of Las Vegas, is currently 0-6 in the conference.
