New Mexico Lobos

The University of New Mexico Lobos began playing football all the way back in 1892, but there hasn’t been a ton of success for this program. New Mexico is closing in on win number 500 for the program, but the winning percentage is still well under 50 percent.

New Mexico competes in the Mountain West Conference, and the school has won just four conference titles in school history. The Lobos are often overlooked when thinking about teams from the Mountain West Conference or even from that part of the country.

The two biggest rivals for New Mexico are New Mexico State and the University of Arizona. Arizona is no longer on the annual schedule for New Mexico, but New Mexico State is an opponent every single year.

New Mexico Lobos Team News and History

The New Mexico Lobos are current members of the Mountain West Conference, one of the improving conferences in college football. New Mexico entered the 2021 season under head coach Danny Gonzales, and he is currently in his second season with the program.

The Lobos have made just 13 total bowl game appearances in team history, and they are 4-8-1 in those matchups. New Mexico has never appeared in a BCS Bowl Game, and that isn’t even a realistic goal at this time.

Mike Locksley was hired to guide the New Mexico football program on December 9, 2008, becoming the first African American head coach in school history.

Recent History

New Mexico is not a school that has enjoyed a ton of success in the sport of college football, but the recent years have not exactly gone well. New Mexico has struggled since the 2008 season when Rocky Long announced he was resigning from his position.

New Mexico has made just two bowl game appearances since the 2007 season, and they have just one division title since that time. The most recent bowl win came during the 2016 season as the Lobos defeated UTSA in the New Mexico Bowl.

Just getting close to the .500 mark has been a challenge for New Mexico football recently, and it hasn’t mattered which coach is on the sidelines. The Mountain West Conference has also been getting better as a whole, and that has made it tougher on New Mexico to keep up.

Key Players in History

There have been three consensus All-Americans at the University of New Mexico, and all three players have been since 1989. It is hard for New Mexico to recruit some of the top players in the country, and therefore they haven’t had many legendary players.

Brain Urlacher is easily the best player in the history of New Mexico football. Urlacher was named an All-American during the 1999 season, and that followed that up with a Hall of Fame career with the Chicago Bears.

Wide receiver Terance Mathis was an All-American all the way back in 1989, but he is another key player in the history of this program. Mathis had a long and successful NFL career that was mostly spent with the Atlanta Falcons.

Kicker John Sullivan is the only other All-American at New Mexico.

Key Championships

Since New Mexico has never won a national championship in college football, the only key championships have been at the conference level. It has been a long time since New Mexico has enjoyed a conference title, and the last one came in 1964.

That 1964 Western Athletic Conference title was actually the third one in a row for the Lobos. This is one of the best stretches of football in the history of New Mexico and the only real championships that the school has been able to celebrate in this sport.

Conference Outlook

New Mexico has competed in four different conferences since 1931 as they competed as an independent team through the 1930 season. The current conference for New Mexico is the Mountain West Conference, and they have been in this league since 1999.

The Mountain West is split up into two divisions: Mountain and West, and the Lobos are members of the Mountain Division. This conference has been dominated by Boise State since New Mexico became a member.

Winning the Mountain West Conference does typically lead to a pretty big bowl game, as there is national respect for this league. New Mexico has never won the Mountain West Conference, and they traditionally finish in the middle of the pack or worse.

Coaching History

The list of coaches at New Mexico is extremely long, and the school has struggled to keep coaches around for a long period of time. Some of these coaches were fired for lack of success, while other coaches were simply looking for better jobs.

Rocky Long was the most successful head coach in the history of New Mexico football as he led the team from 1998-2008. Long was able to rack up 65 wins during his tenure at New Mexico and led the team to three straight bowl games at one point.

Bob Davie was successful at New Mexico as well, and he is the last coach to lead the Lobos to a bowl game, doing so in 2015 and 2016.
