Key Players in History

The biggest star in San Diego State history has to be running back Marshall Faulk, who earned All-American honors in each of his three seasons with the program. Faulk led the nation in rushing as a freshman in 1991 with 1,429 yards, then repeated the feat as a sophomore in 1992 with 1,630 yards. Faulk was a consensus All-American in 1992 and 1993, was runner-up for the Heisman in 1992 and finished fourth in the voting in 1993, and was voted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2017.

Another highly-productive running back for the Aztecs was Rashaad Penny, who earned consensus All-American honors in 2017 after rushing for 2,248 yards. Penny also finished his collegiate career tied for the most kick return touchdowns (seven) and return (kickoffs and punts) touchdowns (eight) in FBS history. Penny was the 2017 Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year and a three-time MWC Special Teams Player of the Year.

Offensive tackle Kyle Turley earned consensus All-American honors in 1997 and was a semifinalist for the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award as a senior. Turley blocked for three different 1,000-yard rushers during his San Diego State career before being the No. 7 pick in the 1998 NFL Draft.

Another running back, Donnel Pumphrey, was an All-American in 2016 and finished his career with the Aztecs ranked first all-time in NCAA FBS history with 6,405 rushing yards. He is the only player in NCAA FBS history to have at least 5,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards, finishing with 1,039 yards in the latter category. Pumphrey was a two-time Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Year and led the nation in rushing as a senior with 2,133 yards.

Key Championships

San Diego State has three national titles to its credit, winning all three under then-coach Don Coryell. The national championships came in 1966, 1967 and 1968, all at the College Division level.

The Aztecs have won 19 conference championships, including three under Rocky Long in the Mountain West Conference (2012, 2015, 2016). The 2015 championship came thanks to a victory over Air Force in the Mountain West Conference Championship Game, while SDSU won the 2016 title with a win over Wyoming in the championship game.

Denny Stolz was coach when San Diego State won its only conference title in the Western Athletic Conference in 1986.

There were five instances of the Aztecs winning a conference title in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, three under Coryell and two under Claude Gilbert.

Conference Outlook

The Aztecs have played in six different conferences over their history, as well as being an independent for three separate stints. The program started in the Southern California Junior College Conference from 1921 to 1924 before becoming an independent for a season. SDSU then joined the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for 13 seasons.

In 1939, the Aztecs made the move to the California Collegiate Athletic Association, where they played until 1967. After a season as an independent in 1968, San Diego State joined the Pacific Coast Athletic Association for seven seasons. Another two seasons as an independent followed before the Aztecs joined the Western Athletic Conference in 1978.

The WAC was home for San Diego State before it joined the Mountain West Conference in 1999. The team still plays in the league, which is comprised of 12 teams split into two divisions. The Aztecs are one of six teams in the West Division.

Coaching History

The Aztecs have played under 18 different head coaches, with Don Coryell being the most successful at the helm. Coryell spent 12 seasons as the team’s head coach from 1961 to 1972, going 104-19-2 and winning three national titles.

Rocky Long’s nine-year stint with SDSU from 2011 to 2019 was the second-best in school history, as he compiled an 81-38-0 record. Claude Gilbert, who took over for Coryell starting in 1973, had a 61-26-2 mark over his tenure, which ended with the 1980 season.
