Spartans Football Team News and History

The San Jose State Spartans made their official introduction and first performance as a football team in 1893. Later on, in 1910, they displayed the letter “N” on their uniform for State Normal School at San Jose. In the 30s and the 40s, the Spartans were considered one of the most dominant football teams by achieving a 7-0 and 13-10 in those respective years, when they finally acquired their stadium, the Spartan Stadium.

In the early 1970s, the Spartans football program started their most-winning era when they first imposed a ranked adversary in Stanford with a 13-12. Later on, in 1975, they repeated this feat by winning over Stanford again, with the scoreboard showing 36-34.

The Spartans first showed up in the rankings in 1939, in which they disappeared and came back until 1975, and in 1990 achieved their first postseason national ranking at number 20.

Recent Spartans Football History

In July of 2013, the Spartans joined the Mountain West Conference, which is now formed by schools including the Air Force Academy, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, Hawaii, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah State, and Wyoming. Most recently, in 2020, playing in this conference, the Spartans achieved their first conference title against Boise State with a score of 34-20.

The team has also had a few issues due to low Academic Progress Rate (APR), which holds schools accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes. From 2005 through 2009, the Spartans were targeted for missing the standards and were sanctioned by the NCAA. This situation repeated in 2014, in a different sport, this time in men’s basketball.

Key Players in Spartans History

To mention some of the biggest names in the school football program, it is important also to make note that the Spartans have produced a considerable number of pro players at all positions, including multiple-time Super Bowl-winning head coach Bill Walsh.

Johnny Johnson, who made the Pro Bowl in 1990, played with the Phoenix Cardinals (1990-1992), New York Jets (1993-1994), and the San Francisco 49ers (1996). He was also the consensus Rookie of the Year for the same year he was chosen pro-bowler.

Louis Wright, a former defensive back for the Denver Broncos (1975-1986), was a first-round draft pick and made five Pro Bowls appearances. He finished his professional career with 26 interceptions, 360 yards, and one touchdown.

Six players are currently active in the NFL, including Keith Smith (Falcons), Josh Oliver (Ravens), Jeremiah Kolone (Rams), Andre Chachere (Eagles), David Quessenberry (Titans), and Wes Schweitzer (Washington).

Key Spartans Championships

In the Big West Conference era, the Spartans have become the football team with the most wins in this conference history, with 11 championships from 1969 to 1995. It also co-championed five times in the same conference. The Spartans finally moved to the WAC in 1996 and later on took part in the actual MWC.

The Spartans currently hold a record for bowls of 7-4, most recently in 2020 when they played against the Ball State Cardinals in the Arizona Bowl in Tucson.

Dating back to 1932, the Spartans have won 16 different conference championships, with the most highlighted era from this team being from 1930-1940, finishing with two undefeated seasons and eight titles at that time.

The Mountain West Conference Outlook

The MWC is formed by two different divisions in both: mountains and the West. Colorado State and San Diego State are leading the conference with a record of 2-0 each. However, with a big difference between the leaders, the Aztecs have a six-game winning streak while the Rams have two games in a row. As the numbers show, the Aztecs are running the show in the West division of this conference with a most recent win against the Spartans. Some considered this team the absolute leader and team to beat for the whole conference.

The number one overall in offense is currently held by Jake Haener from Fresno State. The bulldog has an average of 338.4 yards per game in seven games so far, only followed by Carson Strong from Nevada, averaging 318.3 yards. Chad Muma from Wyoming owns the defensive overall, averaging 9.7 tackles a game, and the second place following is Kyle Harmon from the Spartans with 9.6.

Spartans Football Coaching History

In coaching history, the Spartans had had three main eras in the most recent school football program history, initiated by coach Dick Tomey in 2005, when he took control of the team. He finally ended, in 2006, a 16-year bowl drought in the New Mexico Bowl. That year, they played New Mexico in a game that finished 20-12 for the Spartans.

In 2007 and 2008, the team could not perform as it did in the previous year. In 2006, it had produced four draft picks in Dwight Lowrey (first team all American), Jarron Gilbert (defensive tackle), Christopher Owens (defensive back), and Coye Francies (defensive back).

For the next few years, Mike MacIntyre took the team’s leadership in 2010 that took the Spartans in 2012 to a record of 11-2 with a victory in the Military Bowl against Bowling Green. This earned the team top 25 rankings in BCS polls and AP coaches.

Finally, Ron Caragher started as a head coach in 2013. He is still the coach and has a record with the 15-22 following three seasons so far, producing a tied record, a winning season, and a losing one.
