Utah State News and History

The Utah State Aggies are an NCAA Division I FBS team that plays football for Utah State University. The Aggies are a part of the Mountain West Conference. Utah State has been in the Mountain West conference since 2013.

Utah State has been in seven different conferences along the way. They have also spent several years as an independent. Prior to the Mountain West, the Aggies were in the Western Athletic Conference for seven seasons. They spent the most time in the Mountain States Conference from 1938-1961.

Utah State was once known as the Farmers as their mascot. A man dressed in overalls was the fixture as their mascot. The name would eventually transition to Aggies, which is short for Agriculturalists. Several universities used this name that started out as land-grant and agricultural colleges.

With a dedicated and talented roster, the Aggies consistently perform well, consistently ranking high in the NCAAF standings. The team is dedicated to improving their game and they work hard to maintain their position among the top teams in the league. Utah State has had quite the rollercoaster of football teams in the last ten years. They have had a couple of great seasons with double-digit wins. But they have also had struggling years like last season when the Aggies finished 1-5. The team has had four different head coaches in the last ten years.

Blake Anderson was hired this past December to take over for Gary Anderson, who left the team after an 0-3 start. Blake Anderson joins the team after eight seasons as the head coach at Arkansas State University. He has also held other roles at North Carolina Unversity and the University of Southern Mississippi.

Utah State, in the last decade, has had 13 players drafted in the NFL. 2012 was the best year for the draft when Utah State sent three players. 2015 and 2018 saw zero players drafted from Utah State.

Key Players in History

was a defensive end taken in the 4th round of the 1963 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers. Aldridge played 11 seasons in the NFL. His best season was in 1970, when Aldridge was responsible for 13.5 sacks.

Merlin Olsen was a defensive tackle drafted in the first round as the third pick in the 1962 draft to the Los Angeles Rams. Olsen played in the NFL for 15 seasons and started every single game in his career. He was a pro bowler in 14 of the 15 seasons. He received first-team all-pro honors in five of those seasons as well.

Len Rohde was an offensive tackle drafted in 1960 in the fifth round to the San Francisco 49ers. Rohde became the primary starter in 1963 and did not give up that spot for the next 12 seasons. Rohde was selected for the pro bowl one time.

Bobby Wagner was selected in 2012 in the second round by the Seattle Seahawks as a linebacker. Wagner has been highly regarded as one of the best linebackers in the NFL. Wagner is still a current player for the Seahawks. In his 10th season, Wagner has been a pro bowler seven times and received first-team all-pro six times.

Key Championships

The Aggies have won or shared conference titles 12 times. The most recent conference title came in 2012 when they won the Western Athletic Conference with a 6-0 conference record. The Aggies would go on to join the Mountain West Conference the next season.

Utah State has never received National Championship honors. Since joining the Mountain West, the team has won a single divisional title in 2013. This was their inaugural season in the conference, and they have never reclaimed that top position.

Conference Outlook

College football analysts seem rather bleak in their predictions on how Utah State will play this season. A lot is riding on the new hire of Blake Anderson in the head coaching role. He was very successful while at Arkansas State and has had an immediate impact on the Utah State roster.

Logan Bonner, the quarterback, came with Coach Anderson from Arkansas State. He will look to make an immediate impact on a struggling offense. In 2020, Bonner threw for over 1,800 yards and 18 touchdowns. He did have turnover trouble as he was responsible for six interceptions.

Calvin Tyler is also going to play a big role in the 2021 offense. After four injury-filled years at Oklahoma State, Tyler looks to play a full season and make instant contributions.

Coaching History

Dick Romney was the head football coach at Utah State from 1919 to 1948. By far the longest-tenured coach in Utah State history, Romney had an overall record of 128-91-16. Romney was elected into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954.

After Romney, Bruce Snyder is the next closest coach as far as years coached, leading the team from 1976-1982. Snyder was responsible for two conference championships in 1978 and 1979. Snyder had an overall record of 38-37-2.

Since 1950, Utah State has struggled to find any type of consistency in their head coaching position. They have had 21 different head football coaches in this period of time. Whether it is coaches at the end of their career and finishing with Utah State or coaches who have used Utah State as a stepping stone, the Aggies have not had much luck in finding a long-term head coach.
