Arizona State Sun Devils Recent History

The Arizona State Sun Devils’ success could be broken up into multiple eras. During the Frank Kush era (1958-1979), the Sun Devils were the most successful. Frank Kush is the all-time school wins leader, and even the field is named after him. During 1963-1979, under Frank Kush, the Sun Devils only lost twice to the Arizona Wildcats (their rival).

Fast forward to 1992-2000; Bruce Synder led the Sun Devils. Synder is the second-most winning coach in Sun Devils history. More than 40 players that Bruce Synder coached were selected in the NFL Draft. Bruce Synder won multiple coaching awards during his time, including the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award.

As of 2018, longtime NFL Head Coach Herm Edwards has taken over the Sun Devils. Though Herm Edwards hasn’t had the same success as Synder, the team is performing well. Despite allegations and rumors, the team is 4-1 to start the 2021 season. Even if Herm Edwards loses his job this year, he’s had a successful tenure as a Sun Devils coach.

Key Players in Sun Devils History

One of the most decorated and respected players in Sun Devils history is Pat Tillman. Tillman was a linebacker for the Sun Devils in 1994. Despite his small height, Tillman excelled at the position. In his junior year, he helped the Sun Devils go undefeated and helped take them to the Rose Bowl. In 1997, he was voted as the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year.

Another Sun Devil that we can’t fail to mention is Terrell Suggs, another linebacker. Some would consider Terrell Suggs to be the best Sun Devil ever to make it into the NFL. His accolades in the NFL include multiple Pro Bowl selections and a Super Bowl ring. He also holds the record for most sacks in Ravens team history.

Lastly is Darren Woodson, the hometown kid from Phoenix. Much like Tillman and Suggs, Darren Woodson started as a linebacker. By the time he went to the NFL, he was a safety. Woodson spent his entire career with the Dallas Cowboys and was selected to the Pro Bowl five times. Woodson was also part of the 1990s Cowboys, who won three Super Bowls in a decade.

Key Championships

The Arizona State Sun Devils don’t have any national championships under their belt. Although they’ve gotten close, they were unable to secure one. However, they have plenty of conference championships to hang their hat on. These conference championships span through three conferences. In total, the Sun Devils have 17 conference championships.

Seven of their conference championships were in the Border Conference. This was during the early years of the Sun Devils. From 1931-1961, the Sun Devils won seven conference championships. Two of those championships were won by Frank Kush, the all-time winningest coach in Sun Devil history.

From 1986 until now, the Sun Devils have only won three conference championships. In 2013, the Sun Devils won a division championship for the Pac-12 South. From 2013 until now, the Sun Devils haven’t won a conference or division championship. Herm Edwards is hoping to turn that around this year, and they’re off to a good start.

Conference Outlook

The Pac-12 is packed full of great teams, but the Sun Devils are off to a good start. They’re currently 5-1 on a three-game winning streak. One of their wins was over the 20th ranked UCLA. Through the entire Pac-12, the Arizona State Sun Devils have the best record. They’re ahead of Oregon State, Oregon and UCLA.

This is great news for the Sun Devils, who are looking to get back to the top. They have a chance to win their first conference championship since 2013. There could be a chance that they’re invited to the College Football Playoffs as well. If so, this would be huge for the Arizona State football organization.

The Associated Press currently ranks at No.18, which is their best ranking in years. The most notable win this season is a 42-23 win over UCLA. Even with all the distractions, the Sun Devils have been incredible this season.
