Oregon Ducks

The Oregon Ducks have been an extremely successful college football program over the past ten years, and there were periods of success throughout history as well. Oregon started playing college football back in 1894, and the school is still looking for its first National Championship.

Oregon has been a member of the Pac-12 Conference since 1964, and they have won that league a total of nine times. Few league members have been as successful as the Ducks in the 21st century, and they have also emerged as one of the most popular teams.

Oregon has a relationship with Nike, and that has helped this team become famous due to its unique uniforms that are worn each week. The Ducks have garnered plenty of national attention in recent years and have been competitive against some of the best teams in the country.

The Oregon Ducks might not have the most storied past of teams in the Pac-12 Conference, but they have easily been the most successful over the last 20 years. Oregon has been able to attract top talent due to world-class facilities and the chance to play under a huge partnership with Nike.

Winning the Pac-12 Conference has become routine for the Oregon Ducks, but that hasn’t translated into a ton of success on the national level. The task for Oregon now is to continue its dominance in the Pac-12 while also winning its first-ever national championship.

Recent History

Since the turn of the century, Oregon has been one of the most dominant teams in the Pac-12 Conference. Oregon has won eight Pac-12 Conference titles since 2000, and they have also appeared in a pair of National Championship games.

Oregon won four straight Pac-12 North Division titles in 2011-14 and then won another one in 2019. While the rest of the Pac-12 Conference has shown extreme parity, it has been common to see the Ducks on top of the league standings.

The Ducks entered 2021, having won back-to-back Pac-12 Conference championships, and were one of the favorites to win it again this season. Strong recruiting classes have allowed Oregon to establish dominance in one of the best conferences in college football.

Key Players in History

Quarterback Marcus Mariota is arguably the best player to ever suit up for the Oregon Ducks, and he is the only Heisman Trophy winner that the program has had. Mariota led the Ducks to a Pac-12 title back in 2014 and took them to the national championship game.

Running backs LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner had a three-year stretch for the Ducks from 2010-12 that was unprecedented. Those two running backs were credited with getting the Ducks on the path to being one of the best programs in the country.

Another key player in the history of the Oregon football program is quarterback Norm Van Brocklin. Van Brocklin was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame back in 1966.

Key Championships

Since there have been no national championships for the Oregon Ducks football program, looking at the most important Pac-12 championships is the only way to go. It’s hard to argue which has been the biggest title, but there have been a string of them of late.

The 2010 and 2014 seasons were the most successful for Oregon as they were a finalist for the national championship. Those were the two closest calls for the Ducks, but winning the Pac-12 Conference continues to give them a legitimate chance.

Conference Outlook

The Pac-12 Conference is known as the “Conference of Champions,” but it hasn’t been very successful in the sport of college football for a while. This league has struggled to even get a participant in the College Football Playoff, but Oregon has been the league’s best chance.

The Pac-12 is split up into two different divisions when it comes to college football, the “North” and the “South.” Most would agree that it is a pretty even split as both divisions are typically competitive.

The winners of each game meet up in the Pac-12 Championship Game each year, and the winner traditionally advances to the Rose Bowl Game. In the Rose Bowl, Pac-12 teams meet up with the champion from the Big Ten Conference.

While there have been plenty of Top 25 teams coming out of the Pac-12 in recent seasons, the league has been known to beat up on each other throughout league play.

Coaching History

Oregon has had 32 different head coaches in the history of the program, and nine of those coaches were able to lead the Ducks to a bowl game. There have been some terrific coaches leading the Oregon program, but a number of these coaches have also jumped to other programs after finding success with the Ducks.

Mike Bellotti is the head coach that really turned the program into a national contender, and he led the team from 1995-2008. Bellotti’s teams posted a 116-55 record during his time as head coach, making him the winningest coach in the history of the school.

Chip Kelly and Mark Helfrich were next in line after Bellotti, and each head coach led the team to the National Championship game. Both coaches came up short, but they helped keep the strong football tradition going at Oregon.
