The Washington Huskies football program is a Division I FBS team in Seattle, Washington. They are a member of the North Division in the PAC-12 Conference. The Huskies have been a member of the PAC-12 since 1916.

Washington has been with PAC-12 so long, they have seen the conference change names five different times. Washington currently ranks fifth amongst all FBS schools in the total number of wins. Washington has dropped out of the top 25 for winning percentage.

Washington has been known as the Huskies dating back to 1922. The school decided that it was a much better name due to the ability to characterize Husky. Prior to this nickname, Washington went by Sundodgers, a testament to the weather in Seattle.

Recent Washington History

With COVID messing up most of the 2021 season for several schools, Washington was only able to play four games, going 3-1. Unfortunately, getting to play four games meant they were not bowl eligible at the end of the season. 2021 would snap a ten-year streak of playing a bowl game at the end of the season.

Jimmy Lake is entering his second season as the head coach of the Huskies. Lake takes the reigns after former coach Chris Petersen decided to retire and take a position in an advisory role. Coach Lake would move up from his position as defensive coordinator into the head coaching role.

Key Players in History

Hugh McElhenny was drafted in the 1952 NFL draft in the first round by the San Francisco 49ers. He would go on to play nine seasons with the 49ers. He finished his career with short stints in Minnesota, New York, and Detroit. McElhenny was named to the pro-bowl game six times.

Mark Brunell was drafted in the fifth round of the 1993 NFL draft to the Green Bay Packers. Brunel only spent one season in Green Bay, before heading to Jacksonville where he would spend nine seasons. He also played in Washington, New Orleans, and New York. In his time with the Saints, he was on the team that won Super Bowl 44.

Lawyer Milloy was a defensive back drafted in the second round of the 1996 NFL draft to the New England Patriots. Milloy spent seven seasons in New England and was on the Super Bowl 36 team that won. Milloy was a four-time pro bowl selection.

Warren Moon went undrafted but ended up playing 10 seasons with the Houston Oilers. He spent the end of his career in Minnesota, Seattle, and Kansas City. Moon was named to the pro bowl nine times. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.

Key Championships

Washington has won five national championships in school history but the only one that is a consensus national championship was in 1991. The team finished their season with a perfect 12-0 record, defeating Michigan in the Rose Bowl by a score of 34-14.

Washington has won 17 conference championships in school history. Since 1980, the team has won nine. Seven of those championships came back when the PAC-12 was considered the PAC-10. They have won two championships since becoming the PAC-12, most recently in 2018.

The team has won four Northern Division championships inside the PAC-12 conference. In 2020, they were given the title, as their opponent was unable to compete due to not having enough players out of COVID protocols.

Conference Outlook

Washington is a little of a mystery coming into 2021. With only four games being played last season, there is a lot of speculation as to how good this team really could be. The biggest game on Washington’s schedule this season will see Oregon come to town.

There seems to be a consensus amongst several college football analysts that Washington will finish behind Oregon this season. Dylan Morris, who started for Washington in 2020, will regain his freshman title due to COVID NCAA rules. Morris was impressive last season as a true freshman, throwing for almost 1,000 yards in four games.

Washington will feature three running backs for most of the season, but the air attack will be the main priority for the Huskies. If Morris can avoid a ton of turnovers and keep Washington moving down the field, the Huskies should be very competitive in the PAC-12.

Coaching History

One of the first coaches to coach multiple seasons for Washington was Gil Dobie. He was the head coach from 1908-1916. Dobie’s record at Washington was an astounding 58-0-3. He is solely responsible for the 40 game winning streak Washington went on.

Jim Owens was the coach at Washington from 1957-1974. Owens led the team to back-to-back ten win seasons and a National Championship in 1960. The Huskies also won the Rose Bowl in 1964 under Owens. His final record in Washington was 99-82-6.

The successor to Owens was Don James from 1975-1992. James is the winningest coach in Washington football history by a long shot, with an overall record of 153-57-2. Under James, Washington won four Rose Bowls as well as an Orange Bowl. James was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.
