Texas State University Bobcats

The history of Texas State starts back in 1904 when the school was known as Southwest Texas State Normal School when the first football team was put together. That team would go on to play games against other Texas schools and universities before 1919, when Oscar Strahan took over as the school’s first athletic director.

They became members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1922 before becoming founding members of the Lonestar Conference in 1932. The team won its first conference championship in 1948 under head coach George Vest. The team won a co-championship in 1954 and 1955.

One of the best seasons in school history was in 1963. The team compiled a perfect 10-0 record and won a conference championship. The team would go on to become a division II recognized school in 1980. In 1984, when the team joined the Gulf Star Conference, the team made its first appearance in Division I-AA.

The team spent 26 seasons as a D I-AA school before joining the Western Athletic Conference in 2012. The team only spent a single season as a member of the WAC before joining the Sun Belt Conference, where they are presently representing. The move in 2012 was the first time Texas State became FBS eligible.

Texas State Championships

The team was able to win Division II national championships in 1981 and 1982 under head coach Jim Wacker. Those two seasons, the team combined for a 27-1 record, with a perfect season of 14-0 in 1982.

Texas State has won 14 conference championships. The first was in 1921, when they won the Texas Normal championship. In 1924 they won the Texas Teachers college championship. They won the TIAA in 1929. Texas State won the Lonestar Conference five times a the NAIA division and four times at the Division II level.

In 2005 and 2008, the team won the Southland Conference Championship in the D I-AA. Since becoming FBS eligible in 2012, the team has yet to win a championship. They have been eligible for bowl games twice, once in 2013 and 2014. In 2013 they could not participate due to the two-year period needed after joining the conference. In 2014 they were just skipped over.

The team appeared in the DI-AA playoffs twice. In 2005 they made it to the semifinals before being eliminated by North Dakota State. In 2008 they were eliminated in the first round by Montana State University.

Key Stats by Texas State

The first two conference championships the team won are not technically added to the team’s overall conference championships, so with the 12 they have won, they are currently 55th out of the 131 FBS teams.

Texas State has only ever produced three NFL draft picks since becoming an FBS school, ranking them 126th out of the 131 teams. They have never been ranked in an AP poll, tying them with 28 other teams for last in that statistic. The same goes for Heisman winners as well as All-Americans.

The team does have 518 wins all-time, putting them in the top 100. They also have a 52% winning percentage, placing them top 80 of all FBS teams.

The Top Players from Texas State

Drafted in 2015, David Mayo is an inside linebacker who will play for the Washington Football Team in 2021. He was drafted by the Carolina Panthers and spent four seasons with them. He was a member of the New York Giants in 2019 and 2020.

Fred Evans, a defensive tackle, was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 2006. He played a single season with the Dolphins before being traded to the Minnesota Viking, where he would go on to play seven seasons. While Evans never really cracked the surface of a prestigious NFL career, he was able to record three starts in 2013.

Anthony Sean Johnson, a defensive back, was drafted in 1989 and played seven seasons in the NFL. His best season was in 1992. He started eleven of the fourteen games for the Washington Redskins. He was responsible for 70 tackles that season and had three interceptions as well.

Ricky Sanders, a wide receiver, was drafted in the first round in 1986 to the Washington Redskins. He spent eight seasons with the Redskins, before heading to Atlanta for his final two seasons. In 1988 Sanders only started three of the 16 games but was able to accumulate 12 touchdowns.

Top Coaches at Texas State

While there were several good coaches in the early days of Texas State football, the more prominent name that comes to mind is Bill Miller. The head coach from 1965-1978, Miller had an overall record of 86-51-3.

Jim Wacker, head coach for only four seasons from 1979-1982, may have the two biggest accolades in school history. Wacker was able to lead the Bobcats to back-to-back Division II national championships in 1981 and 1982. Wacker left after the 1982 seasons to become the head coach at TCU.

Following coach Wacker, Texas State has struggled to find much success in the head coaching department. Since the 1983 season, the team has had eight different head coaches, with coach Dennis Franchione as the head coach two separate times.

The current head coach is Jim Spavital. Similar to his predecessors, Spavital has struggled to find success at Texas State. In his two seasons as the head coach Spavital has a record of 5-19 overall and 4-12 in the Sun Belt. Spavital has coached several talented players, and surely he can figure out a way to turn this program around.
