Troy Trojans Stats

The Troy University Trojans was first established in 1909. There were several hiccups along the way for the team, such as World War 1 and other historical acts that caused the football team to take a season off. Since 1942 the team has had a football team that has competed at all different levels of the NCAA.

With Troy’s rich history in Alabama, prior to being called the Trojans, Troy spent some time as the Red Wave. A name coinciding with the prestigious Alabama Crimson Tide. They spent their early years competing at the NAIA level of college football.

In 1970 the team joined the Gulf South Conference as a Division II school. In 1996 the team joined the Southland Conference, which changed their competition from DII to DI mid-major. Then in 2004, the team joined the Sun Belt Conference making them officially a DI-A school, where they can be found today.

Trojan Championships

The team has won three national championships, none of them at the D1 level. The first was in 1968 when they won the NAIA championship and held an 11-1 record. In 1984 and 1987, the team won DII nationals championships. Both seasons finished with 12-1 records.

Since joining the conference, the Trojans have won the Sun Belt conference six times, most recently in 2017. Prior to that, the team had won 12 conference titles since 1939.

When the team joined the FBS in 2004, that made them bowl eligible. Since 2004, Troy has participated in eight bowl games. They have a record of 5-3 in bowl games and have won their last four, with the most recent being in 2018.

The 1987 Division II championship may have been the best in school history. An absolutely dominant performance marked them as the best team in the division. Quarterback Mike Turk was the quarterback in both their 1984 and 1987 championship. In 1987, Turk was able to score two touchdowns to lead the team.

Key Stats for the Trojans

When compared to the other FBS teams in the NCAA, there are quite a few statistics that are not great. However, when you take into account that they have only been in the FBS for a few decades, they are actually a lot more impressive than they get credit for.

The first one is the 21 conference championships the team has. In comparison to the other 130 teams, that ranks them 19th overall. The team has compiled 549 wins all-time, which leaves them at 82nd. They have had 34 draft picks, which sits them at 105th. That stat alone is one that is questionable due to their lack of time in the FBS.

Troy has never had a Heisman winner, they have never had an All-American, and they have only spent a single week in the AP polls. They have competed in eight bowl games in their short time competing in the FBS. They also have a .566 winning percentage which places them 50th overall.

Top Trojan Players

The best overall player to come out of Troy University is defensive end DeMarcus Ware. A Dallas Cowboy for most of his career also spent some time in Denver with the Broncos. Ware was selected to the Pro Bowl nine times and was first-team all-pro four times. Paired with another great in Denver in Von Miller, Ware went on to win Super Bowl 50.

Osi Umenyiora was another great defensive player from Troy University who went on to have a great career in the NFL. Drafted in the second round in 2003 by the New York Giants, he spent nine seasons with the Giants, then his final two years with the Atlanta Falcons. He was a two-time pro bowler with one season being named to the All-Pro team.

Another defensive player from Troy who had a solid NFL career is Leodis McKelvin. Drafted 11th overall in 2008, McKelvin had a great rookie season and was named to the All-Rookie team. While that may have been his single greatest accomplishment, McKelvin played in the league for eight seasons.

Overall, Troy has had 35 drafter players make it to the NFL and 56 players play in the league. Currently, there are five players in the NFL from Troy University with two wide receivers and three defensive players.

Top Coaches in Troy History

The first coach that was able to bring Troy to the forefront was coach Billy Atkins. The former NFL star for the 49ers was an all-star in 1961. He retired in 1964 and transitioned to become the head football coach at Troy from 1966 to 1971, Atkins had an overall record of 44-16-2. He took the team to their first national championship in 1968 when they won the NAIA championship. He went on to become an NFL coach in 1972.

Coach Charlie Bradshaw was the next coach to have more than one or two successful seasons with the Trojans. After coaching under the great Bear Bryant at Alabama, Bradshaw took over at Troy in 1976. He was the coach there until 1982 and had an overall record of 41-27-2. He had Troy finish in the top three of their conference five out of the seven seasons.

The most prestigious coach in Troy’s history is Larry Blakeney. Taking over the team in 1990, Blakeney took over the Troy State Trojans. For his first six seasons, the team was a Division II team, then in 1996, the team became D I-AA, and then in 2004, they became D I-A. Coach Blakeney became only the second coach ever to take a team from Division II to D I-A.

Blakeney was the head coach at Troy for 24 seasons before retiring in 2014. He had an overall record of 178-113-1. Under Blakeney, he won five bowl games in his career. He has been inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, the Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame, and the Troy Sports Hall of Fame. The field was named after Blakeney at Veterans Memorial Stadium, where Troy University plays its home football games.
